After getting to know this lens for 10 days, I found a couple interesting things about the 12-24G:
1) There is some edge stretching, especially at the wider range (12-18mm). A distortion correction profile could make this even more apparent.
2) Although field curvature is well-controlled, I detected a "wave-type" shape curvature, especially at the wider range. When focusing at mid-field (infinity), the edges and center are not perfectly focused and need focusing "away" from infinity. When focusing at center, the edges look great but mid-field degrades and needs focusing "towards" infinity. That could be one of the reasons some members are reporting softer corners.

I am interested in the 16-35 2.8 only if it is very good at astro... which includes no crazy vignetting like the new Canon. Otherwise you can almost add the Batis 18mm which is a great astro lens with the 16-35 f4 for not that much extra weight/cost. Plus, you can leave the Batis at home during the day and the 16-35 at home during the night.

For astro, I would wait for my Laowa 15/2 test. I can't say much yet though.

I ordered the Nisi 150mm filter holder but it may not get here till August. I'll have to debate which polarizer. I like Haida and Breakthrough as they are very neutral. Have to see if they make a 150mm.
I'm driving home from NY so I'll get on it late in the week and order one
I'm really interested to see the comparisons between this lens, the 12-24 and the 16-35 f4. I'm pretty sure how they will end up from best to worst but I'm mostly curious to see how much difference there is between the 12-24/16-35 f2.8 and the 16-35 f4.

I'm just about done dealing with this 12-24 testing and musical lens chairs. I have a decently good one, and am pleased I think.
One thing I wanted to say is that my 24-70 GM beats the 12-24 at 24mm pretty easily. I think that's to be expected, so there is room for improvement (in a 16-35 GM possibly?). The 12-24 beats my 16-35 f4 I believe so this is a step up, and I gain the coverage at the wide end, so I think it is a good trade off.
I don't think I'll be getting the 16-35 GM, but will be watching with interest as reports of that lens start to come out. It sounds like we can look forward to that showing up early in August...
Plus the 100-400 will drop in a few days too.
Lots to be excited about with Sony FE cameras at the moment.

For those of you in the UK, I just got an email from Wex stating that they have received their stock of 16-35 GM lenses and will be shipping today. So hopefully will get my copy tomorrow.
They also mentioned to me on the phone that they have received enough stock to satisfy all pre-orders they currently have.

I'm wondering if anyone has any observations from experience of the new Sony 12-24 as compared to the Zeiss 18? I think that's the choice that I'm currently looking at. I very much like my Batis 25, and the size in the bag of the new zoom or the Batis 18 are reasonably similar.
I do understand the zoom versatiility of course, but I also appreciate the primes that are sharper out to the edges at lower apertures compared to typical zooms. (My 16-35/f4 needs around f8 to have frame edges that come anywhere close to the Batis 25 at, say, f5.6 or so. DOF discussions aside.)

Thanks Fred. I had been travelling and missed Chuck's posts. I think his results pretty much seal the deal for me as re: ordering the 12-24. And I probably won't keep my 16-35/4.
Big thanks to Chuck for his efforts with those comparisons!
