p.1 #1 · Sigma 135 1.8 thoughts? AF functionality

I think I fell off the deep end but now having thoughts of the Sigma 135 1.8. With a sale or two I would have the money and I really like the idea of a fast 135 1.8 with AF. One thing I noticed like some Sony lenses it does have a AF/MF switch on the lens which I really like. In truth because the Batis 135 does not have it , I'm immediately turned off. One thing for me is this would probably not be a landscape lens unless I put it in a small bag and stuck in my trunk and pulled it out when I need it. I have done that many of times and in all truth I can't hike that damn far anymore. Reality of getting older but more importantly for me is podium type work and I do a ton of executive headshots. Part of being a commercial shooter is once you get a good corporate client you get the fun stuff but you also get the events and PR work to go with it. I have the Rok 135 F2 which is a freaking laser which I would sell of course but getting AF in this focal length would be really nice. Not sure and why I'm posting this is with the Sigma adapter can I get Eye Af. It's not mandatory but be nice but if I can at least get Flexable spot or even moving the Zone to far right for verticals that would help. Runway stuff this is too short even with crop mode. Anyway can we talk about AF functions with the Sigma Adapter on what options we do get. It's very confusing on what's working and what does not. Been there done that on the Canon and not interested going back to it.

Thoughts

Oh and Happy Easter. Hope your eggs are filled with goodies. Lol

Guy, don't know if you saw this review, but the Sigma looks amazing.

And some nice comparisons to other lenses at the Nikon board:

I'm confident it will work with EyeAF although it may not be as fast/accurate as a native lens. Perhaps the MC-11 will need a firmware upgrade.

I would put more faith in the resolution results if they used something more than the 22mp 5dmIII. That is, by today's standards, a fairly low pixel density. Which is crazy to think about, but true.

LensRentals tested it:
https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2017/04/sigma-135mm-f1-8-art-mtf-charts-and-a-look-behind-the-curtain/

It seems to have superb resolution wide-open even when compared to the best 135/2 lenses on the market.

The only question mark is rendering but I really like what I've seen so far.
Here is a sample: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1484875/6#14001752

True, but to make comparisons to other lenses already tested on the 22mp, this is really the best way. For me it's relative...when the results on a 22mp sensor show the Sigma is sharper on the edges at 1.8 than the Canon 135L is in the center at any aperture...those results will hold true with a higher resolution sensor.

Yea thats what I would be hoping is firmware upgrades. It be really nice to have the Eye AF but as long as i get the other AF options that would work too.

Yea be nice if tested at our 42mpx sensors but at least we get a good idea. This is one lens i am not to worried about its resolution output. It looks to be a laser

there is a comparison with the nikon 105 1.4 and the samyang 135mm
seems like overall the nikon 105 is falling a little behind the other two optically, between the samyang and the sigma it's some pros and cons on both sides but both perform on a pretty high level in all aspects.

no words on sony af performance though. Also, testing only one lens is never a valid test because sample variation hits all lenses to a degree.

No . My opinion and this may rub folks wrong is i hate the focusing on the Basis lenses. Absolutely no feel with MF. And i like the AF/MF switch. Now price is subjective as i do not mind spending the big bucks if something is worth it. Given the market and what you get this to me is overpriced by 300 dollars. If it was 1700 given a 2.8 lens than I think thats the right price. But again thats Guys opinion which many may not agree with and thats okay too.

If its on par with my Rokinon 135 F2 I'm not even close to worrying about IQ. The Rok is a laser.

Guy, you ask after AF functionallity, and if the Sigma 135/1.8 + MC-11 will give access to all native AF functions on the Sony A7RII. The answer is yes, in theory, because Sigma refers to the 135/1.8 as one of their "Global Vision" lenses. If you get the lens, you will be the guinea pig, who tests, if Sigma's promise is true.

Added: Do keep an eye on the MC-11 compatibility, performance thread.

Thanks. I should probably grab the dock as well than for updates. I don't mind being the guinea pig , it's all good . As long as I get a good chunk of AF capabilities I'll be happy but will test everything for sure. I'm convinced to go for it. With surrounding the long end kit with the Sony 50 1.4, Sony 85 1.8 and this it should be a very powerful combination of glass and they all offer different things fo me too. Bokeh certainly the 50 and hoping this Sigma as well. AF speed I'm counting on the Sony 85. The Sigma lens speed and accuracy of nailing it wide or close to wide is what I'm thinking. Hopefully it will give us Sony users a idea what it can do. I'll buy Canon mount just because it's better on resale. Plus with adapter I can rent Canon glass too

I have the Sigma Art 135mm solely to use with my A7RII and it works excellent. Eye-AF works and is very accurate as is general AF. I haven't had a chance to try it in really low light but it does AF in my basement with a couple lights on.

AF accuracy is spot on.

Sony shooters are getting EyeAF and Image stabilization with this lens. Two features not offered to Canon or Nikon and this lens was designed for them!

Ken,
Can you post a picture showing the Sigma 135/1.8 with MC-11? Thanks for the samples!
Fred
