p.8 #1 · Sigma 135 1.8 thoughts? AF functionality

Not sure how informative this will be, but I did a craptastic mini-comparison between the Sigma and Samyang, indoors, in ambient lighting.

Not very photographically interesting, so I didn't think it warranted a separate thread, but you can see that both lenses are very similar, with the Sigma being a bit sharper to my eyes. Given the very favorable reviews, and comparison of the Samyang to the Zeiss APO 135, that's high praise.

Note: I used AWB, and while my color vision isn't very good, it looks like the SY renders the WB differently. Custom WB would likely negate unwanted color cast - my primary interest was in general sharpness and contrast, so I didn't bother with it.

All shots at F2.0, save the last pair at F8.0, and shot on a tripod.

All images have the LR lens profile applied, and +48 NR.
Otherwise, none should have had any adjustments, but it almost looks like LR (or me??) may have done something with the basic adjustments during export on some images.

Pairwise subject focus starts from the front, leftmost (viewer's left) item and progresses to the right, moves back a row and repeats.
In each pair, the Sigma is first, followed by the Samyang.

(Sigma had a difficult time locking on the face of the figure behind the bird. Took 3 attempts and needed to recompose slightly to find the rightmost edge of the head to lock focus)

For those with both Rok and Siggy 135s (bluloo, perhaps Guy), a good test to include is flaring. I had to switch out my Rok during a jewelry shoot yesterday due to stray light nuking my contrast, even with the hood. Nikon 70-200/4 came to the rescue (shhh ). Samyang really needs to get their act together because it's wrecking the fine work of their optical designers.

I was about 5' - 6' from the objects in those photos, which is, IME, in the shorter end of the range in which the dreaded flare tends to occur.
I used a barn door on the bottom of the lens hood to get rid of the flare.

I only see that flare at certain distances (usually nearer the MFD), when stopped down, and under certain lighting conditions. It's not terrible to work around outdoors, but indoors, seems trickier.

This is what it looked like at F8, sans barn door, at that distance.

Any updates to this thread? I heard the new firmware Sigma released for the 24-105mm and a few other lenses may have also slightly improved AF performance with the 135mm even though it wasn't stated.

Has anyone seen any videos showing the 135mm used for portraits? I can't find any consensus on just how good or bad the AF is with the MC-11. But the pictures I'm seeing taken with it are some of my favorites ever.

As long as face detect works well (locks within 1 second) at half body and full body distances I think I'd be happy with the performance. And how well does continuous (AF-C) face detect or eye-AF work?
