p.1 #1 · Nikon's new strategy....sounds good to me...

A recent article of an interview with the head of Nikon's camera division has made a statement about the direction Nikon will take in their camera division.

High end DSLRs and Mirrorless is the name of the game....

That works for me... .http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20170224-00010008-newswitch-ind

Bullet points supplied by NRs from the Google translated article....

* The Nikon camera business is undergoing a major restructuring.
* This is a quote: "bringing in multiple mirrorless cameras at an early stage" - to me this means announcing multiple mirrorless cameras soon.
* Nikon is taking an aggressive approach to rebuild their camera business.
* Nikon has no plans for closing domestic or overseas manufacturing plants at the present time.
* In the future Nikon will concentrate their resources on medium to high-end DSLR cameras and lenses as well as mirrorless cameras.
* Nikon will have fewer models in the future.
* Nikon still wants to develop a high-end compact camera. Really Nikon?....really?...Better be that wide angle DL as that is the only one that really made sense to have a decent market for it away from competition

I suppose a big factor is the maturing of digital technology. Main-line bodies can realistically have a 5-7 year life cycle, kind of like in the film days. After all, my vintage 2012 D800 does not leave me wanting, and that's 5 years old now.

I would like to see some more PF telephoto lenses, and some compact primes. Of course, a Df2, please.

I'm hoping they bring out a modular system, similar to medium format but with more options. That way they could have 5-6 year product lines, but every year there might be a new sensor, AF module, or whatever to upgrade to. Keeping it modern and competitive, and having more choice in upgrades.

But, I don't want a wide angle zoom DL with a 1" sensor. I'd rather have a selection of full format hi-end compacts with razor sharp prime lenses. I'd carry a 25mm and a 35mm some days. Maybe a 50mm other days.

p.1 #7 · Nikon's new strategy....sounds good to me...

Some folks over at NR are criticizing Nikon for being late with this, but I actually think they are ahead of pack with this level of deep reflection. The camera market has been in dramatic flux for 15 years, flux that has scrambled model lines, profits, market share and long term strategies, while leaving little time to reflect.

From the boom and subsequent bust of compacts, to the boom in DSLRs to their own bust, to the addition of video to still bodies, and on to the introduction and flat market of the mirrorless camera, mainstream imagining looks nothing like it did in 2000. And of course the biggest disruptor is the cameraphone, that carved away the profitable, low-hanging model lines for everyone.

Over all this time the old line companies have followed market share. Adding compacts, then expanding their DSLR lineup, then adding video, then making larger sensor compacts, and finally adding mirrorless. But with the bust in almost every segment, they no longer have the market to lead them. Nikon, sensibly, is rethinking their place in this environment. Good!

Ok, Fuji and the m4/3 group has rethought this as well, but they have decided to live in one small but steady part of the market. In addition, those folks are almost all parts of much, much larger companies, and so imaging is not an existential question for them like it is for Nikon.

So, Nikon's retreat to re-think their role is wonderful. An integrated, market leading viewpoint will make a world of difference. Nikon has traditionally been an aspirational brand. Bring that back! They have an image (sorry for the pun), of rugged, dependable, innovative and high-end equipment. Bring that back! Make Nikon special. Make Nikon stand out.

DSLRs? The D5, D8XX and D7XX FX lines please. The D5XX and a hybrid D7XXX/D5XXX DX line please. And, perhaps, add a video oriented camera to each as well. If not, make video a co-equal feature with every camera. Make sure connectivity is seamless.

Mirrorless? Two RF type models, one FX and one DX. Add FX versions of the D8XX and D7XX. Then make a DX version of the low end DX DSLR. Make sure video works great on all of them. Connectivity as well

That's 10 bodies, 6 FX, 4 DX. 5 DSLRs, 5 Mirrorless. Throw in a DL type line of 1" compacts, perhaps a couple of high-end bridge models (P900 type), and that's it. If it isn't class leading, don't make it. Let trickle down cover the bottom of the market by selling the old models for 2-3 years (a la Apple iPhones).

Lastly, market the hell out of them. Start by licensing "Kodachrome" by Paul Simon. Get some one like Justin Timberlake to remake it! Then make sure every ad has one of the Nikon Ambassadors in it, telling us why only Nikon can let them make their images. And end by telling us how we can build our legacy using Nikon, just as Joe McNally, Moose Peterson, Ami Vitale, Dave Black, Joel Sartore, Vincent Versace, Lynsey Addario and Bambi Cantrell have.

Peace,

Todd

From my admittedly layman's perspective, I hope they make the right decisions because there's little room for error at this point. To so badly miss the mark with the action cameras in every regard, not to mention the DL series, is not a good sign for such an old company with a dominant presence in the marketplace.

Jazz62 what mark did they so badly miss with action cameras. I'm a sports shooter using D4s and D500 to shoot amateur and pro sports weekly alongside Canon action camera users and don't feel like I'm missing anything. We sit side by side in editing rooms comparing similar photos and I don't feel like I'm missing any marks to the Canon camp. I envy some of the Canon users for their skills but not for their equipment.

I think he was referring to the KeyMission series of action cameras, not the high end cameras used for action. With GoPro already having a lock on the market (a declining market) and 360 photos/videos being new tech that isn't really that sharable, Nikon's seen very few sales in that line.

I'm sorry for the confusion. I couldn't think of the actual name while I was typing. By action cameras, I was referring to the the Key Mission cameras.

Hope they get it right. I do think that mirrorless is only a temporary bandaid at this point. Nikon should have jumped in a year after everyone else did (~2011, 2012 at the latest), because for a company that could never be #1 when there was really only one other major player with SLRs (Canon), they are going to be late to the party that's been frequented by several other, already established players (Sony, Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic, Samsung, etc). Chances are, a lot of the people who wanted/needed mirrorless have already gone to those systems, and I doubt they'll come back for whatever Nikon doles out...especially after how the 1 series was treated (abandoned? no? yes? "what's 1 series"?)

High end bodies are great and all, I'm sure we'd all agree...mostly because that's what most of us use. I've always understood though that the low-mid end (3xxx-5xxx and to an extent 7xxx) series were the money makers because of the numbers sold in comparison to the hi-end bodies. Maybe that's changed...hopefully it has if Nikon will spend less time on the entry level bodies. Especially since they haven't really done anything to many of those in years (other than non-working Snapbridge and tilty screens)

Fewer models is a good thing, and perhaps fix the naming scheme. I talk to plenty of Canon users thinking of buying a Nikon and they don't know where they bodies fit in among the others, or in relation to Canon's offerings. I've always thought there should be a 3xxx, a 7xxx, and now I'd squeeze in the 5xx since it's here and doing well, then 6xx/7xx hybrid which would maintain that body style of the 5xx, and a 8xx and finally your flagship body. One thing that they need to do is to make the buttons and ergonomics more similar. Changing locations of buttons in the same series is annoying. It's also annoying if the layout is completely different. Keep the buttons in similar places, and just remove ones that lower end bodies don't get (ie. AF-On).

I actually think the hi-end compact is still a good idea, although like mirrorless probably too late.

All these ideas overall would've been great 4 years ago when the decline really started, but today it's not really instilling any confidence in me personally. They still seem out of touch with their core-user. Ex. How long did it take for the D500? Yet, the D300 was a great seller and people were pining for an update as far back as 2009 and the D300s was not it, just another example of "hey, lets add one half-assed feature and call it an update!" from Nikon. Same with the D700. I don't think one is necessary, the D600 and 750 outperform it in every way other than framerate. But I'm in the minority because there's a ton of people still clamoring for one. If Nikon was truly in touch with their customers we'd have had one announced already. Instead all I see are products that no one wants (Keymission) and promises that they can't seem to keep.

Probably sounds like I'm bashing them, and to an extent yeah I guess so...but I do hope they succeed. Don't want to use any other brands.

I think Nikon is doing exactly the right thing.

Just think about it: on photography forums, worldwide, you seldom see ANYone using the cheap cameras ... at the lowest they're using the D7100 and above [mostly D2/300, D71/7200, D500, D7/750, D8/810(E), D3(s/x)/4(s)/5].

I can't even think of a single post made, anywhere, by any Nikon user, deploying a lower-end camera than a D7100/D300 to share their imagery.

In fine, the "consumer base" who might be interested in low-end camera-toys are only using FB (texting/sharing with friends) ... they don't really consider themselves "photographers" ... they don't want to trouble themselves with "processing" images ... they just want to take some pictures (to be shared in real-time) ... and as such they are simply using their cell phones, which already come equipped with nice low-end/mid-level cameras, which serve their purpose perfectly.

Nikon is waking-up and smelling the coffee of the modern user world

I hope they mean a really high-end compact. A Nikon competitor to the RX1R or X100 is something I'd totally go for.

We as photographers can be quite selfish in our needs and wants particularly in a diminishing camera market. The strategies do have to be restrained in the interest of their corporate group. It may mean in about 2 to 5 years, not all camera companies will try and compete with very similar products and concentrate on their strengths.

Fuji having been through the pain of restructuring has focused on APS and now mini-MF, rather than develop a FF in an already crowded market. This is smart and will ensure the continued growth of Fuji.

Nikon accepting hard decisions will be well positioned to continue development of new products but in line with the market decline.

It is worthy to note the earthquakes last year affected both Nikon and Sony in a large way. I know a number of Nikon colleagues who have mentioned that stock and spare parts are now only starting to flow. New products lines would all be delayed, particularly relating to camera bodies. Sony has also been affected and no doubt delayed the introduction of the A9/A7rIII.

At the moment we have great choices of camera and lenses, albeit from a range of manufacturers. The development cycle of updated models will further extend from the normal 2 years to maybe 3 or 4.

For instance with the Sony RX1rII, great camera, why would another manufacturer try and compete in this niche market. The entry cost is high and very much restricts your market share. Personally I love this camera, but there so many choices now.

With FF mirrorless now, there is no way you can have a bodies without the latest 4K video functionality including IBIS. We may not use the video a lot, but the market demands it now. Maybe this is why Nikon has taken a step aside. Also Nikon maybe re-evaluating their strategy as the mirrorless FF lenses are exceeding the size and weight of most DSLR counterparts. The early advantages of the Sony A7 system has diverged, to larger, heavier and more expensive lenses. The choice of the lighter/smaller lenses are there but there is no free lunch.

I would love a FF mirrorless Nikon with a state of the art EVF that would take my existing MF AIS lenses with no need for an adapter. Just the way Leica does w/ its digital RF cameras - all M glass no matter how old works on it. It could be something like a Nikon version of the Leica SL.

So...don't compete with mirrorless as Sony ( full frame ) and Fuji ( aps ) have that market. Don't compete with high end P&S as the X100 and Sony RX1rxx have that market. Don't compete with Canon DSLR as they have over 50% of that market.

Where or where does that leave Nikon? Outside looking in?

But Leica is a very small niche company. I don't believe Nikon wants to be that type of company. How many of these retro mirrorless cameras will Nikon sell when the likes of Sony and Fuji forge ahead with new tech?

I would love a medium format. I'D LOVE it.
Make me a medium format camera specifically designed for wedding photographers, keeping the MP down to 24 and FPS at 5 or 6 and I will be a happy camper.
The reason for 24mp is for the ultimate best low light camera (because if pixel density) and a happy medium workflow.
