Looks like you are off to a great start with this lens. It is great to see the evolution of its ownership on this thread, showing the different genres in which it can shine.

I have been tempted to conclude that the f/1.4G primes have acceptable manual focusing capabilities based on a sample of 3(35, 58, and 105mm). The forgettable one being the 50mm and still to sample 24 and 85mm.

It's certainly easier to MF any lens on a Z body with magnification, focus confirmation, IBIS, etc, but the 35G has such a nicely dampened ring that it's just as nice feeling in practice as a fine MF only lens.

I've never experienced such a good focus by wire implementation.

Are you sure it’s focus by wire? Usually AF-S lenses aren’t. I think in F mount only AF-P lenses are focus by wire?

I thought I had read that, but no, not sure. It sure doesn't feel like it, however, I've never had a non-wire lens with a ring that would continue to rotate past the hard stops like this one does. Anyone know what that's about? My guess is it has something to do with the M/A functionality and is part of a clutch system with the AF motors.

edit: a simple power off test reveals it's not by wire

Yes, it's a clutch type system.

Alex, your pictures are stunning. I too like the F mount 1.4 lenses....such special rendering.
Do you have a preference between the 28mm 1.4e and the 35mm 1.4g?

@alexander_ross also curious that you use this 35mm f1.4G and the Tamron 35mm 1.4.....or did you switch? Curious of your comparison between the two (your images are great with each of them though).

Great to see this lens getting some love. I sold mine a while back and am now looking to get another as it has the look that I love - wide open it's great - example here on D800E

I agree, I really like it but it seems somewhat in the shadow of the 28mm 1.4e which seems to get all the plaudits. i am tempted to try the 28mm 1.4e but the used prices are still quite high and the difference in focal lengths is not that great and so couldn't see myself keeping both.
I am wondering if I will see a significant difference between the two lenses?

Thank you for showing interest in my work! To begin with, I will tell you the background of the purchase of these lenses. So, the Tamron 35 /1.4 was acquired after the sale of the Sigma af 35 /1.4, which on my d750 was not very confident in autofocus and was too slow for reporting. Tamron is the result of a conscious choice after a serious study of the market at that time. The Nikon 28 /1,4e was purchased at a very significant discount, as the front cover was lost or stolen as a result of unpacking and checking in a photo store. after carefully examining and checking the lens, I came to the conclusion that it is in a new condition and the loss of the cover is just an accident. It was a great stroke of luck! The Nikon 35 /1.4G was also bought on sale after Nikon's flight from Russia. Nikon dealers closed the warehouse program and sold off the leftovers at very low prices. During this time, I managed to try almost all the lenses I was interested in.

Comparing 28 and 35 lenses is a bit incorrect, because 28 gives a much greater coverage of space and conveys perspective in a different way. You need to have both of them.
as for the quality and rendering, the 28 /1.4 e is closer to the tamron - it is also optically good and has a very smooth side, works well in the background light and compensates well for aberrations.
The Nikkor 28 mm f/1.4 is one of the diamonds of the Nikon system along with 58/1.4, 105/1.4 and 200/2
The Nikon 35/1.4g is an old-school lens that appeals to me and many other Nikon fans. I use it on creative shoots, for myself, for pleasure.
The Tamron 35/1.4 is the best 35mm lens on the Nikon F. It is perfectly balanced in terms of drawing and technical quality, fast enough for reporting, compact for this quality, and not very expensive. This is my main working tool even on z cameras.
Of course, all that I have stated is just my humble opinion based on the experience of using these lenses. I really hope that the upcoming Nikon 35 /1.2 will replace all these 3 glasses for me. Although the field of view of 28 mm is out of reach for 35 mm. I'm sorry if I've tired you with so many words and using machine translation.

This is great thanks. The 35mm 1.2S looks like a huge win for Nikon to me as well. I look forward to seeing what you do with it!

Thanks Alex for taking the time to reply so thoroughly, much appreciated. Your work is top quality and you have created your own look and style... one can tell a photo is yours without even seeing your name. There is such a well crafted elegance to your work.

Ian
