If I was shooting weddings (which I do) I would want the 35 1.4g. Not just for the wonderful Bokeh, but for the extra light for focusing in dark churches/venues, the focus accuracy, color, contrast, and extra build quality.

For my taste, it is already a bit long in the tooth. It was tested and designed with a D300 and D3s in mind, with 12MP cameras, but now with a D810 or successors with even more MP it lacks the crispness I personally like to have, but that is of course subjective. It catches up to the sharpness the new 35/1.8G delivers wide open at f2.8 only. Bokeh is nice and probably its main selling point. AF is in my opinion on the slow side. You can still use it, but for snaps wide open this gets often difficult. Then there is strong vignetting (many reviews measured it above 2ev) and strong CAs. This is even visible in the smaller images posted here, where the bokeh balls are surrounded by a green line. For the money where I live I get the new Canon 35/1.4ii, which is the gold standard right now in my opinion doing almost everything right. Maybe Nikon is updating it in the future. What I would definitely call the 35G is that it is a "character lens", which renders quite unique. If this is what you are after, it is a fine lens and separates your work, until all others bought one, too ;-)

I love the results that this lens creates, especially on the D700, so I will share a few. Just for fun here is a 58/35 comparison. Apologies for diluting the thread, but figures you might find the side by side of interest.

Great Lens this 35mm, love it. Great combo with my 85mm f1.4 or my 58mm f1.4.

I wanted to like this lens .... but ... noticed that I missed a lot of moments due to slow focusing on the d750.

This is the very exact reason why I bought a 24-70mm.
If I need fast focus, that means the subject is moving fast, which means I'm closing down to at least 2.8.
Makes no sense using the 35mm, does it?

It makes sense to me ... I dont' like heavy zooms ... I get the look and shots I want with my siggy 35 art that I missed with the nikon 35 1.4g. No problems.

Are you serious right now? You really wanna go that way?

You're complaining about weight and AF? The hefty art pig weighs 665g while the 24-70G weighs 900g, and you're gonna tell me weight is an issue?
You're just like half of the members here complaining about weight when it's not really the issue here.
Complaining about some 235g extra weight is ridiculous!! Find something else to complain about! Because "weight" and "slow AF" isn't working!

Also, you wanna complain about AF? How about LOTS of reports of Sigmas AF inconsistencies?
Seriously, give me a break. Realistically, if weight and AF were an issue, you'd go with a 35mm f/1.8G at 300g.

Even then, I still wouldn't try to justify buying a 35mm f/1.8G because weight is an issue.
Go buy a Canon S120 or Iphone or something.
Geez.

sounds like you are using your 35 differently than I do. I use it for over 50 percent of the day as a general coverage lens. You may be using it for times with with more controlled situations. You may prefer your 24 - 70 for general coverage. I tried both as my general coverage lens and for my uses, the 35 1.4g was too slow at focusing. Other than that I really like the character and general image quality. Personally, I have not had auto focus inconsistencies with the siggy yet but I heard that may happen as the lens ages. If the 35 1.8g had a similar look to the siggy, I would prefer it for the weight. When I can get the same performance from an Iphone sized camera ... I will switch to it as well. To each their own. Even in my 40's I didn't care about weight but as time marches on it becomes a factor.
