Tim - I would mostly agree with you that the colors are somewhat exaggerated but this was quite deliberate and intentional, as I like to treat my landscape images as art i.e. an interpretation of what I see rather than a representation of the scene. Having said that, I may pull down the color saturation a tad for a local competition that I will be entering.

This has been debated before on FM, and I think Tim makes a good point. The main issue is not necessarily representational vs. art, but when is over-boosting the saturation spoiling the image with gaudiness--like a beautiful woman with too much make-up. It is very subjective. Some people can react to a heavily boosted image as "wow!" Others with "Ugh!" Just seeing one version of the image makes it hard to judge....

I am looking at it on a 5k IMac and looks very classy, not overdone at all.
I get your point. It is indeed very subjective, and can be controversial as well. I can take all criticism but I am not going to post images just to win votes or likes i.e. compromise myself for the sake of mass appeal. If you like it that's great, and if you don't that's fine too. And if you don't like the color version maybe you will like the black-and-white version.

A year or two ago, I did a print for a friend. I made the mistake of letting him sit in on some adjustments. He really liked the purple and blue canyon walls, and that's the way it was sent to the printers.
Every time I go over to his house I just cringe when I see the print hanging proudly on his wall. Another friend has a much milder version on his wall, and it makes me happy to see it.
My comment was based on my experience and opinions. And its just my opinion, not worth much really, but since you posted a very nice image, I felt compelled to comment.
But if you want it pink and green, its really ok with me, and I would defend your right to do so. But my comment might not be so polite.
Tim, I do appreciate your input/comments - I honestly do. Many of us do get carried away with HDR images. And you did get me thinking (which is a good thing) so I will definitely consider toning it down somewhat, for the competition - even though I know the judges will probably accept it as it is - but all it takes is for 1 or 2 judges to disapprove of the strong colors and I will lose some precious points because of it.

It could also be the screen one is looking at. I wouldn't change a thing. Especially seeing some of the very popular posts in this forum. While many of them very tasteful, but clearly not realistic.
Preferences will vary between colour or black and white, but what does make either version superb is the capture of the subtle swirls in texture accentuated by lighting .
