The ZM is pretty impressive at any distance IMO...

The ZM 35 is crazy--it's one of the rare lenses I just kept reading fantastic things about. Then I purchased it, and I simply can't believe how lovely the files are. The more I shoot it, the more I like it. It's in my top 3 lenses I've ever owned.

The portrait there is about 4-6 feet away from the subject.

If anyone has a few raw files taken with the ZM and a thin filter-modded a7rii to share, please PM me.

I used the lens on unmodded Sony bodies and the m240 but am curious about its performance on a modded Sony 42mp chip.

Many thanks.

I think Jack (Jako) is your guy for that--might want to pm him.

Unfortuantely, I believe that both Jack and I have a Kolari Modified A7r and not an A7rII. Jack uses the lens with his unmodded A7rII as well as with his modded A7r when he wishes the best performance into the corners.

Indeed, I had no desire to Kolari-modify A7RII for a few reasons. Modded A7R did the trick to my RF lenses (SEM21, ZM35 and Lux-50) SEM21/3.4 was replaced by the outstanding Loxia 21/2.8, which made Kolari modded A7R a dedicated camera for ZM35. Lux-50 and Cron-90 look alright to me on stock A7RMII (Lux-50 at infinity and f/8 has better corners on Kolari-modded cam)
Would I like to mod the A7RII? Perhaps, but at current $CDN to $US rates I feel more happy to travel instead.

For Leica/Zeiss RF lenses owners interested in using their glass on higher than 24MP res cameras (landscape shooters) modded A7RII maybe a great option, and more than just a backup camera.

This is a cross post. For whatever reason, I have not shot this lens as much as I should. Here is one from the other day. First image is uncropped, second is a crop of the first. I had left my Loxia 50 at home and that would have been a good option for this pic, but the ZM 35 worked well and has sun stars that are equally pretty....

The thread is quite the lovefest

Fred has both RX1rii and ZM35/1.4. I'm sure he'll chime in.

Unlike M bodies, which have an ungodly number of options at 35mm, including this lens firing on all cylinders, the quest for the great 35 on the A7 series has been long and arduous.

Does this really beat the Rx1rii at 5.6 for landscape? Fred would know. No way, I think it would need f/8 at least to get there and I still would be surprised if it won. But maybe that's wrong, and I think he said the zm is actually better.

Bokeh? Well coma issues aside, it seems pretty good. RX1rii and CV 35/1.2 I would put well ahead, but maybe I have that wrong too, many nice pics here. I did a few tests with the CV on my stock A7r in 2013:

35/1.2 by unoh7, on Flickr

and I believe this is the CV stopped down to f/8 or 11 on stock A7:

DSC02315-3 by unoh7, on Flickr

At the time this seemed the best RF 35 by quite aways. Interestingly the same lens is searing on the Kolari A7 with great landscape performance. Better than on M9. Of course I do not lug it around in the landscape. It is my M9 lowlight mainstay.

But I would love to see a head to head on the stock r2 CV35/1.2 vs ZM35/1.4 both at speed and at f/8

In Sony world the ZM 35/1.4 is a small lens. In M world everyone is appalled by the size. The ZM 35/2 actually beats it for landscape, according to Lloyd, on M240. I like the 1.4, but why would I carry it for my on a hike? Well, I could make some nice blurry flowers, I guess. My current ZM 35/2 in this role on M9:

L1034609 by unoh7, ZM 35/2 f/4 M9

Of course that lens is execrable on A7 and just usable on the Kolari. If was still shooting a stock A7 I would already have the ZM35/1.4, and not look back as all you guys have proven to me. It's actually a very good deal compared to FLE.

A7rii.mod2....well I guess I will just have to test and see if I really pine for a better 35, once I get my act together and do a next gen mod on that thing. I am resisting M10, which has seductively made ISO6400 a reality with M body. But the M9 is a personal delight for me daily. It still just kills at base ISO, to my taste. And the r2 with a Leica level mod would really compliment the M9 in so many ways, with lots of new possibilities even the gorgeous M10 can't offer: 42mp, AF with M, Silent Shutter, and 4k, plus great with the long glass I have, even may AF it. Most of you will have the A9 by then

Here is how the CV does on my current Kolari at f/8:

DSC08979 by unoh7, on Flickr

That shot kind of shocked me. It's better than the ZM35/2 on the Kolari by quite a bit. Same day now WO:

DSC08999 by unoh7, CV 35/1.2 WO A7.mod (kolari v2)
Bottomline, I'm glad to see a 35 everybody is crazy about for A7x, and the thread inspires me to seriously consider it.

My current lens lust list is: 1) SEM18(I finally realize it is better than ZM18 and Kolari loves it-prices down). 2) 50 Lux asph (I've wanted on forever to use one the M9-prices way down) 3) ZM......

But first things first...prices on A7rii dropping.....yum yum

he says "according to lloyd", presumably in his leica section.

not according to zeiss or any of the comparisons i've heard of, but i don't pay for lloyd.

on a more related note for this thread, has anybody compared the performance of the zm 35/1.4 with and without corrective filter for starscapes?

Which makes the poster responsible for his source?

Great you stand by your posting friend [sure he can], but I still want to see how ZM 2/35 beats ZM 1.4/35 for landscape

I think Fred said after 5.6 the ZM is better, somehow...

I don't think he did either. At what distance did he compare? And isn't there a mid zone dip in the RX1 st 5.6 or 8 or something?

infinity.

yeah, i think it can be mostly eliminated by choosing your focus point correctly though.

What I said is Lloyd tested ZM 35/2 and ZM35/1.4 on M240 and Biogon won for landscape, according to him. That probably at least F/5.6

That is a fact--I think, but please check me at his site in 6-way shootout. I did not intend to say anything else. Apologies if I wasn't clear.

Obviously it won't win on any A7, well maybe on my new supremod.......

I still am skeptical the RX1rii will loose for landscape at f/8 or F/11 to ZM35/1.4 on A7rii, and I'd also think the Loxia would beat the ZM35/1.4 at those apertures.

But I have no idea what is the real case, of course.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RN7EVx8dI4c/UFSfQLVoi7I/AAAAAAAAD5Q/5CYzdjRPsiw/s1600/sony-rx1-mtf-chart.png

above RX1 below Loxia:

http://www.verybiglobo.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/mtf.jpg

Zeiss could not imagine anyone would go below F/4 on the ZM35/1.4
http://www.verybiglobo.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/spec_5.jpg

My money is on the RX1rii in a very careful test. Copy variation could easily swing it, though. The Rx1rii cameras supposedly have sensors aligned by copy by technicians. But some sake the night before....or a impact....And the ZM 35/1.4 is made by Cosina, which has also, like Solms as well, put out some varied copies.

Zeiss is far too coy with MTF F/stop selection.

Biogon-T also only goes to F/4:
https://cdn.photographylife.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Carl-Zeiss-Biogon-T-35mm-f2-ZM-MTF-Chart.jpg

But if you extrapolate to F/8 I think Lloyd may well be right. Not a given. But the Biogon lines are very smooth and you expect the edges to come well up. The 1.4 has mid zone drop and far edge crash. More to fix, but not impossible.

The RX1(r2) on paper though looks like it's great for landscape any my few shots bear that out. Once you find infinity, which is PITA on all Sonys, but especially terrible with focus by wire.

Rx1rii at F/8:

Crossing by unoh7, on Flickr

Where the POF is I have no idea, but I was impressed

Despite my efforts to learn and lots of help, my results with the camera were too unpredictable in daily use. It gave me some fantastic shots and missed some no-brainers even after weeks of practice. M9 was a great relief to return to, but I still have the RX1rii at the house.

Skiing I take the M9 over this or A7. I can trust it with low number of frames. I don't like the extra weight, but I take small lenses.
