Fun messing around with the Techart. The longer the focal length, the more you have to prefocus. Still, it is helpful. I was messing around for five minutes today just to see if it might work with a Leica R 280/4 and a 1.4x extender. This shot is not great work of art (far from it), and this is a heavy crop, but I was pleased that it is sharp at 100%

I got my TP a week or two back to use with the Zm 35mm and mostly Im happy with it considering its limitations etc etc. The issue I have, apart from the battery drain, is that sometimes when I turn the A7R2 on it does its back and forth and then wont autofocus.

I turn the camera off and on again and next time it generally works. The first time it doesnt feel llike the movement is completed through the range? Any thoughts?

Well, its the same here, from time to time it doesnīt work with my ZM 35mm. Switching it on and off often works, but it seems to need some additional programming work.
An other thing is that I donīt know how to switch to manual mode. Sure, due to the fact that I have back button focus I simply can focus by turning the focus ring, but I am not allowed to use the magnifying.

Ive tried it. Its OK focusing wide open then stopping down to the working aperture but its a bit of a pig focusing when stopped down even in bright light. And of course at the longer end it need some manual help to shorten the focusing range. It can be a bit unresponsive but I noticed when holding under the lens to support fully it was better so I guess the lens + adaptor weight is on the borderline. I do need to give this combo a bit more testing though.

I don't use back button focus so I assign button C1 to Focus Settings and the AF/MF button to AF/MF Ctrl Toggle. I switch between AF and MF by pressing the AF/MF button and press C1 repeatedly to bring up the MF focus area box then magnify and (if necessary) magnify further. If you wanted to keep back button focus, you could assign the Center button to AF/MF Ctrl Toggle. Other TAP users use different button assignments to achieve the same objective.

I'm using with the C/Y 35-70 (and C/Y 100/3.5, C/Y 100/2, OM 50/2, ZM 50/1.5).

Likewise for me, C/Y 35-70 hunts a lot stopped down, even in bright light. Have to do a little pre-focusing if I do drastic changes in distance. Also helps to use TAP primarily for fine tuning focus after getting it close manually in lower light or stopped down. And across all lenses, much more sensitive to vertical contrast changes ("lines") than horizontal.

I haven't used it much, but i think I am seeing big differences in performance across lenses... perhaps it would be useful to try to assemble a list of lenses that work well with TAP.

My experience is basically the same, with the Sonnar 35-70 F3.4. Quick AF wide open, but worsens considerably as you stop down.

Any lens I've used, stopped down much beyond f5.6, tends to either hunt more, or is unable to focus in a reasonably timely manner without excessive hunting.
Sometimes F8 is usable, in very good light, but I don't think I've ever gotten a focus lock with any lens at apertures smaller than F8.

I wonder if it's something that might be potentially tweakable with a FW update. Given that native lenses can AF at smaller apertures (albeit not nearly as well as wide open), I'd assume it's doable in theory at least.

Has anyone else noticed that TechArtPro have released Firmware version 4 on their website. I've just downloaded and it seems much the same as V3 - they state that it 'Improve focusing accuracy and speed. Improve adapter stability'.

I've never had any problems with either stability (or batteries draining) so may not get any gains - and the speed seems no faster than before, but I'm happy to go with it.

John

edit : oops - a bit of a senior moment here not keeping accurate track of the V numbers

v4 has been out for a while. Most of us noticed improvements in AF speed and battery life, FYI.

With this new update I might actually consider buying this adapter, will wait for a couple of months see if sony updates any of their A7 series cameras. If the auto focus on the cameras is improved it will be an improvement on adapter focus as well!

Which begs the question, hows the Techart Pro on the a6300 with the new firmwire?

I would like to see further improvements on focussing with location of focus area and f stop used. Still crazy that manual focussing lens that I used to sell, when I worked in a store many years ago, can now be auto focus. Crazy man. lol

Yo, Techart. Can you give me and other existing customers here any info on the battery drain issue? How far away is a firmware upgrade to fix it?

We are still looking into it but we really can't give a time since this is a reverse engineering product. I hope you understand.

Ok peeps, I posted a question regarding switching from AF to MF and back again on the A7RII and have a lot of views, but no one chiming in, perhaps someone where has feedback.

I've got a lot of button pushing going on that seems redundant in this process and I've not been able to see a way around it. The way I have my camera set up is with the AF/MF toggling back and forth between AF and MF modes with the round button in the middle of the switch set to activate AF.

What I can't get my head around is the way the buttons seem to conflict with one another. When I with the lever out of AF and into MF, I need to hit the AF activate button to be truly in MF mode. Hitting it makes the focus area box disappear, and then I can bring up the focus magnify feature if I want. But if I don't hit it twice, I get the error message "This operation or setting not available as follows Focus Mode Single-Shot AF."

What is equally frustrating is that when I go to switch back to AF and I haven't triggered the autofocus right before to bring back the focus area, even though I've switched the toggle switch back to AF, it doesn't work. I've got to put the lever back in MF mode, hit the AF button to bring the focus box back, then toggle back to AF.

Am I totally missing something here? I would have imagined that toggling back and forth between AF and MF would be the only operation. I love the A7RII, but damn, I feel like I've got to be doing something wrong.

Lever set to MF/AF = AF mode.
Push center button to turn off AF, move the switch to AEL, and now you're in MF mode.
Pushing the center button here brings up the focus magnifier box.

Switch back up to MF/AF and push center button and you're back in AF mode.

Jack I have camera setup for C2 as AF/MF toggle switch and C1 as magnify.

Here I can easily go to Af to Manual with the TAP without touching anything in the TAP so I can go back and forth easily than C1 to magnify in MF to focus. It's so intuitive like this.

Now you can make any C button to AF/MF toggle 1,2,3 or 4 or you can make any wheel direction that also . So you can change any of those defaults like drive, ISO, WB as well just depends what's most comfortable.

This setup keeps the control on the camera and not the TAP which is IMHO the best course of action since I don't have to do anything with the TAP

Has any of you managed to find an Arca Swiss plate that would fit when the Techart is mounted? I had a pretty small one that I thought would fit, but it doesn't due to the little bump on the Techart case. Dremel might be the only way, but I'd like to investigate alternative plates first.

Also, any success using the Techart Update Android app on a phone with Android 4.4.4 ? The Play store keeps telling me my phone is not compatible (4.4.4), and if I download the .apk elsewhere and install it, I get the launch icon, but the application will not run.
