I always forget to post in this thread. I have found the lens most useful for portraits, but haven't shot a ton of those lately (outside of one I posted in the portraits thread). It's got such nice rendering. The only things I've noticed are that I can hear it focusing (quietly), which I haven't really heard in any of my other lenses. And it's not the quickest to focus. Fine, but not as fast as some of my other lenses. That being said, it is just excellent when outputting images.
Here is an older car on a nearby street for fun. (Sorry, not at f/1.4).
Here is a shot from the 50 Zeiss Planar today. This was F2.0. I usually shoot pets with the 135 or 70-200 but when you can get close enough I love the bokeh and proportions of the 50.
I was just looking into picking up a 50mm and so glad I stumbled upon this post. For me it was between the Sony 50mm 1.4, sigma 50mm 1.4, Sony 50mm 1.2, and the Sony 55mm 1.8.
I was drawn to the price of the 55mm but after seeing your review and the CA comparison, I think the Sony 50mm 1.4 is the better option for me.
I've owned the Zony 50mm for a year or two......about 3 months ago I bought a Sony 50GM with the purpose of replacing the Zony with the GM......after comparisons, I returned the 50GM. Great lens, but it was a complete toss-up between the two.
For my likely, this is the best child photo I have done in 2021.
It was not a photoshoot (obviously), colours are not good - but the shallow DOF with both her eyes and subject in focus... so tender)))
A9, Zeiss Planar 50mm, 1.4
(IMO, with current used Planar prices this is THE best lens in huge Sony line as USD per great image ratio)
