I am new to Sony, coming from Nikon. One of the key points of attraction is the Zony lenses, of which this is my favorite of all of them. I had the 50 1.4GM and it was nice and sharp but should I dare say "boring." Not this lens. Easily the best 50 1.4 I have ever used/owned, and would be the last lens I would ever part with. This thread, which I was just made aware of proves it in my view. A perfect blend of optical perfection with just the right amount of character and artistic flair.....what more

My take on the ZA 50mm f/1.4 – long-term user perspective

I’ve had the Planar ZA for a very long time now – bought it about 9 years ago, and for a good stretch, it was practically glued to my camera. I shot nearly half of my daughter’s childhood with it. Even today, I’d still describe it as an outstanding lens.

If you break it down into individual technical metrics, it may not look extraordinary on paper compared to the newest releases:

Sharpness: Even by today’s standards, it holds its own remarkably well. Resolution is genuinely impressive for its age. That said, I suspect the newer GM variants (both 1.2 and 1.4) do edge it out in pure sharpness wide open.

CA correction: It’s not a "CA monster," but wide open, you can get some lateral and longitudinal chromatic aberration in high-contrast scenes – though it's usually correctable in post. The GM lenses are definitely better controlled here. The Planar's CA performance isn't bad per se, but if a lens at this price point launched today with that level of CA, I think the forum crowd would be quite critical – we tend to expect near-perfection these days.

Bokeh circles: At f/1.4, they’re cat-eye shaped toward the edges. At f/1.6 they get rounder, and from f/1.8 onward they're almost perfectly circular. Thanks to the 11-blade aperture, they stay round across all apertures when stopped down. The GMs do this a bit better wide open, but what I love about the Planar’s bokeh circles is how clean they are – no onion-ring structures. I previously owned the 85mm GM for years, and while its wide-open bokeh circles were rounder, upon closer inspection you could often see faint textures inside them.

Bokeh character: In most situations, the Planar delivers beautiful, creamy, smooth bokeh – exactly what most of us hope for. But in certain tricky lighting or busy backgrounds, it can occasionally look a bit restless or harsh. The GM lenses seem to deliver consistently pleasing bokeh even in challenging conditions.

Colors: Very good, but distinctly different from, say, Loxia or Batis rendering. The Planar is much more neutral – slightly cool, perhaps – but very natural and lifelike. Colors feel close to reality, which I personally appreciate.

Now, here’s the thing: In tech forums like this, we tend to obsess over individual performance categories and compare numbers. And by that measure, the Planar may no longer be class-leading in every box. But what gets lost in that pixel-peeping is the overall image quality – the rendering.

And that, to me, is where the Planar still belongs to the absolute best in the entire Sony ecosystem. The images it produces are simply gorgeous. The overall impression is often strikingly impressive – skin tones are natural and vibrant, images feel highly three-dimensional, with a palpable sense of depth. The way this lens handles contrast is almost emotional – it draws you into the photo.

When I look at images from different lenses side by side, my eye inevitably lingers on the ones shot with the Planar. That’s not something you can replicate in post by just cranking up the contrast. In comparison, many newer lenses – technically excellent as they are – often come across as clinical, lifeless, or just plain unexciting to me. The eye doesn’t get hooked.

Even after all these years – sometimes after months of not using it – when I pick it up again and review the files, I’m still surprised by the results. And I’ve owned this lens for nearly a decade. That says a lot.

So yes – the 50mm ZA may not win every lab test anymore, but it absolutely wins in character and soul. And that’s why it’s the last lens I’d ever part with.

p.55 #2 · Sony Planar T* FE 50/1.4 ZA tests

Excellent summary and very balanced. Of all of the lenses that I have owned and later sold, this is the one that haunts me. I needed to sell something when I bought the GM and don’t remotely regret getting the GM, but I sold the wrong lens. I loved the rendering, when I had it but love it even more so, when I look back at old photos of my kids.

The only minor thing that I would add to your summary is that - compared to newer lenses like the GM - the ergonomics/weight distribution is a noticeable difference. The GM feels like it is part of the camera body. The Zony felt more like an awkward graft. To be fair, personally, it did not bother me at all, but for people that prefer smaller and lighter kits, it might be an issue.

I keep thinking about getting one of these again but have always gotten stuck at defining when I would prefer to use it over the GM (as I have several other 50s just collecting dust). It would be a fun problem to have, though.

Great writeup! I’ve been admiring the look of your photos with this lens for some time now. I may need to try one.

p.55 #4 · Sony Planar T* FE 50/1.4 ZA tests

It's many people's favourite Sony 50mm, helped along by T*, Sony's fine early aspheres and just one ED element among its complement of 12 elements. 780 grams was the big drawback on these small cameras. It appeared mid-decade (2016) when huge lenses were the lens makers' preferred way forward (Otus, Milvus, SL, etc.).

The 'advanced aspherical' element (AA) glass 'is a specialized lens element with a high thickness ratio between its center and outer edges aimed at 'improved reproduction and rendering.' The ZA has one of these and one regular asphere. So that still left a lot of spherical optical glass inside it.

The later and lighter GM 50/1.4 also uses two aspheres but they were both 'extreme aspherical' (XA) elements - the idea here was to use an 'evolved manufacturing technique precise to 0.01-micron surface accuracy, eliminating "onion-ring" bokeh in G Master lenses'.

Lens makers respond to desired features, and their designs subsequently reflect perceived needs, as they rise and fall in prominence in the public mind. So we can see their priorities this way. And what appears as the same design features often 'change roles' - some glass and element types actually move from their original role to something new.

Here, aspheres went from correcting aberrations towards showcasing the 'clean' bokeh highlight balls reviews put in front of everyone - 'see, look look, it's not busy!'. Of course, their engineering expertise was not overseen by anyone with an watchful eye for image aesthetics - the tendency is to engineer the personality out of the lens. Very much a case of 'be careful what you wish for'.

Too big a topic to raise here, but coatings are another rapidly intensifying and radiating part of lens development in digital cameras, to become something very different from their basic role in earlier times - and even ten years before.

How does the Zony 55mm f1.8 compare against the ZA 50mm f1.4? Not in terms of sharpness or CA but in colors, contrast and rendering.

Good points about the weight and balance of the 50 1.4GM. In the few months that I had mine it was really a nice handling lens but rendering properties take precedence for me, particularly in this particular focal length. I just love the Zeiss look....

I have the 55 as well, (my other Zeiss) and its a "no brainer lens" to be sure. A little warmer in color, but very sharp at 1.8, but definitely no clinical. I need them both. The smaller form factor of the 55 is huge as it allows me to carry a Sigma 85 1.4 DG DN and the Sony 28 2.0 at the same time in a small sling bag.
I really like the fact that many Sony offerings come in smaller forms. Sony seems to have learned how to compact their formulas very well.

I also have the 55mm. Very small, beautifully sharp, and it looks stunning on the camera. You can easily live with its known rendering quirks once you're aware of them.

Jim, thanks for your thoughts – and I completely agree with you on the rendering. It's one of those lenses that stays with you long after you've sold it.

As for the weight – yes, 778g is certainly not lightweight by today's standards. The lens is built from solid metal, which explains a lot of that heft. I do find it a bit on the heavy side, but for me, it's still just about acceptable for extended shooting sessions. That said, I can't help but think that Sony could have used high-quality engineering plastics and saved 200g or so. If they had, I'd probably grab it more often for casual outings.

I have both the 50 and the 55 as well. While I like the 50's image output (and use it professionally), it's just too big and heavy for me to carry around on a daily basis. That's where the 55 comes in. It's the perfect sized "50mm" lens and the image quality is incredible (if you know its quirks, as mentioned). I'd really prefer it to be more of a 50 than a 55, but I'll accept that considering what I get.

Hi Johnahill, AF is definitely not as fast as the 50 GM. But a few weeks ago I shot my dog running toward me at a fast pace in burst mode, wide open, until he filled the whole frame. Out of ~12 frames, AF nailed about 10 perfectly — which I think is very good — and that was on an A7RIII. On newer bodies it should be noticeably better. It's also not as loud as the 85/1.4 GM, though that never bothered me on the GM. I think the 50 Planar's AF is plenty for portraits or playing toddlers.
