Or, just be a good shooter, !

I could not believe how many thousands of photos made with this lens I had to pour through on Flickr, google searches, etc to find what I was looking for and that is an actual photographer who, composition and subject matter aside, understands light, tone and mood. After looking through over 2,500 on Flickr alone, I just burst out laughing at how bad the photos were.

These are the only photos that even came close to making me want to buy the lens, I get it today and look forward to getting it dialed in:

Well being a good shooter does help. I was merely commenting on the point that it's not good for macro stuff. The depth of field is too shallow wide open and you have to stop it down if you want to do really good shots of flowers or insects, however, you still can't get that close anyway. My first 105 was a lemon I think. I got it right after lunch pre-ordered the thing, and after having it for a few months I noticed that it was really dusty inside so I sent it off to Nikon to get it fixed and cleaned, then more dust started showing up again so I got rid of it and bought a new one.

Thanks for the link below. I love that style of portraiture.

In that regard, agree 100%, not a very practical lens for close up since unless the subject matter is utterly spectacular in this usage, it is a gimmick image to show off shallow DOF...and that is by far most of what I have found this lens used for in the samples I have seen.

I have a Zeiss 50mm F2 Milvus that I use for lifestyle and reportage that I just *love* because of how sharp it is yet the look it imparts wide open. I can just shoot all over the place with subjects because I never really have to even think about hitting the closest focus on it. I usually pair it with a Nikon 20mm 1.8, Leica 35mm 1.4FLE and a 85mm 1.8G so the 105 1.4 ought to really bring in a great new feel for this work when the 85 is just falling a bit flat in character and mood.

My hope is that the 105mm 1.4E will bring that extra mojo that the Canon 85 1.2L has that neither of the Nikon 85's seem to be able to bring. By the samples I shared above, I tend to think this might just be it.

Hey I got married at 23! My point was as I get older, people are starting to look younger at a given age (if that makes sense!)

Congrats on your 400FL Elijah... I don't think you are using the right-sized lens plate on that monster though

Can't wait to see your ceremony and reception shots with this one

@Elijah - Wow, didn't realize you were serious when you said you wanted the 400mm F2.8 for weddings!

Did a wedding this past weekend. Few shots with the 105mm.

Guys, c'mon y'all serious? 😅😂

Saying I wanted a 400/2.8 for weddings was a troll

I rented this baby from NPS for a special assignment.
I dont think I'll ever own one of these unless I retire and will be interested in BIF
Even then, that'll be in the next forty years, I'm sure Nikon will have a 400mm f/1.4Z by then, that only weighs two pounds

Elijah, just wanted to give you a heads up – NPS has changed their address. I can give you the updated address if you go ahead and send me a PM I'll let you know where to send the lens when you're done with it. 😂😇

Thank you kindly, Jim. Fortunate for this great op to break in the
new lens. I doubt I'll be using it at MFD much, but it pleased me!
