My old 85 1.8G is probably 85% of what this lens is and it's cheap as chips, but man this 105 does not fail to impress! You can feel it when you press the shutter release, instant magic.

Nice photo!!!
Do you and some others, desaturate the greens? I feel they should be more vibrant. But then again, photography isn't what it used to be. so many photoshop actions and tones for the natural light photographer. There are so many natural light photographers out there, very few, like myself, use strobes on location. I hope to get more work that way since i'm different and offer unique lighting.

I used a preset from tribe archipelago, modified to my preferences. For what I like to shoot it works well. I don't always use it, but for shots outdoors in heavy greens(which is most of summer) I prefer it.
Having a very strange issue with my 105 1.4E... The left focus points back focus. If I have someones face tilted it will focus on the eye the farthest from me, even though i'm putting the AF point on the closest eye. I can pretty much fix this by focusing on their nose when using those focus points. I tried multiple lenses, multiple cameras. It's the lens. Do you guys think it's even worth sending back to Nikon? Or just focus on nose when I use those focus points...Tried AF-S and AF-C.
Here is an example. I used one of the left AF points, D750, and it focused on the right eye which was further away. If I use the middle focus points or the ones on the right it nails the focus. Tried the lens on my other cameras, same thing. Tried different lenses, all focus perfect.
I'm about to lose my mind. Okay, after all that testing, back focused on the left points on 50 shots in a row with different camera. I put it back on my main camera, now it's spot on every time even with the left points. I don't get it.

Which camera? Far left points? I use center or one left or right of center and then compose. I also only use the AF button on the back of the camera and the shutter button only triggers the shutter, it doesn't focus. You don't use center focus and recompose? That works well for me when using my focus method.
Is this issue on all focus points? Is your focus mode on single AF or continuous? I use the D810 but I haven't experienced these symptoms. If your lens is under warranty then it may be wise to have a check. Or just don't use that left focus for anymore. Elijah sent his in for cleaning and hasn't gotten it back yet at the New York repair center, I sent mine in for cleaning in California because I'm west of the Mississippi and I got it back within six days. It seems like the New York repair center is very slow.

Check the camera and lens contacts, make sure they are clean. Being new camera and lens, I'm sure they are but I'd still look. Is there much slack in the lens mount? After attaching the lens, can you rotate it left or right and see or feel much slack? Just wondering if the lens is making good contact. I know all of this obviously may not be the problem, I'm just trying to help. Firmware updates available?

I'm truly sorry to hear about all the troubles you are having with the inconsistent autofocussing on your Nikon 105f1.4E.
We all know it is capable of producing excellent images, as evidenced by many of the fine examples posted on this very thread. However, it can be extremely frustrating when having to deal with inconsistent AF, especially when one has to pay $2200 for this lens.
Is this problem with every 105E? I would venture to say no. But, this should serve as a reminder to all, that sample variations can happen to all lens makers. Yes, even Nikon. So many people are quick to dismiss Sigma Arts 85/135 even calling them "Stigmas" . I'd be willing to bet that there are far more people who love their Art's than don't, but once in a while you hear of sample variations and then they get a bad wrap. This stuff happens with every manufacturer. So, maybe try sending yours in for service or replacement? Or try Sigma Art. You might just love it especially at roughly 1/2 the price of your Nikon 😊
Or, consider going manual focus with Zeiss. Almost every lens I have is manual and I trust that more than most AF (with the exception of my 200f2vrII).
In any case, I hope that you are able to get your troubles sorted out and can start enjoying the lens.
Wishing you all the best,
Don

Very nice! May I ask what preset you used for that portrait? I really like the color. Great shot, beautiful woman.
It's one of the built in styles for capture one pro.
Color effects- creative 3.
This is maybe the second or third time I've used them but really liked what it did here.
