I think the best solution here is native glass and until some native lenses in certain focal lengths appear you could adapt 1 or 2 H glass. That's what I woul do. H 24mm would certainly be the one

The AF is the feature that's holding me off on this camera. Contrast detect on a medium format sensor. I have a bad feeling about that. I've also come to the conclusion that I'm not looking to switch to a mini MF system. I can't give up the speed and usability of 35 FF. What I do want is a mini MF camera to augment my FF for specific function such as portraits or landscape. An RX1 type MF camera for about $5k or less is what I'm really looking for. $14k for the Hassy kit will buy an A7R II, all three GM lenses, and a top of the line iMac 5K. I know which I'd rather get for $14k. This is a great camera, and I will one day pick up a used one for < $5k, but as a new system, I've decided it's not for me. I'll wait for Fuji or Sony to introduce an RX1 style MF camera.

The only issue with only having CDAF is low light AF performance. Other than that, AF should be good enough with good accuracy. Perhaps close to what we saw with the A7R.

Depending on what you shoot this system can either be the be all or the just not fast enough. For me how I look at the X1D is nothing really matters with AF per say , does not even have to have a meter , what it is for me would be a landscape machine and Travel for quality. There is just no way I can be without the Sony AF system. I would keep both GMs and maybe a Batis 18. Everything else on the block and get the Hassy the 3 lenses and a 24 H possibly.

I have to look at this as a two system setup. It can't do what I did before with a phase body and 5 lenses only. I still need that DSLR style or Sony mirror less like I have.

You kind of are in that same boat. We still need a fast AF system . Unless this thing is a rocket which I doubt very highly

I guess we could also if you can get away with it is a A6300 kit with some nice glass for AF work

Not so sure. Bigger sensors seem to take longer to read the entire chip to process for CD AF. I believe it's why FF won't ever be as fast as m43 unless they migrate to PDAF as Sony did.

It's not just the AF. We'd have to give up IBIS, the vast lens selection that FE has now. That smooth reflection app that's been thoroughly discussed here. 4K video. When I had a Hassy H camera before, I always had to carry a Nikon DSLR for those shots I just couldn't take with a MF camera. I really want this camera, and I'd only need the 90mm for it. That's still about $11k. When I thought hard about it, I realized it's a GAS impulse buy. I really need to see some spectacular images with this camera and that 90mm lens. The images I've seen so far didn't have the MF look. I know this sensor is capable. I've seen the Pentax 645z images. I've thought long and hard about the Pentax and decided to stick to my guns about big, heavy cameras.

We all know this will not be the only mirrorless MF camera to come out. As we say in poker, I want to see the flop before I make a bet.

I think this could make an excellent studio camera. The central leaf shutter can be very nice for some types of shooting (e.g., high shutter speed flash sync) and if you want that feature it just isn't really available for FF 35mm. The lenses offered are a pretty good range too. As a studio camera the 45 XCD f/3.5, the 90 XCD f/3.2 or the 100 HCD f/2.2, and the 150 HC f/3.2 would make a pretty nice kit for not that much money considering this is medium format.

If you wanted to shoot landscapes (and this is the best sensor out there so that could be a good option), then the 24mm, the forthcoming 30mm, the 45mm, the 90mm, and the 210mm would make a very strong kit. So, I don't see the lens offerings as all that limited.

I am definitely intrigued by this camera, but I'm not sure.. Although it is small for a medium format I still find that a travel kit would be larger than I would like. I think there would also be times I would like a faster aperture, although the 100 f/2.2 is quite good. Still I am going to mull this over for awhile.

For me, this camera should excel with long exposures unless the smaller mirrorless body introduces more heat. Differences in IQ when compared to a A7RII with comparable great lenses should not be very noticeable but the files will be more malleable.
I'd expect less than a stop better DR with better highlight roll-off and lower shadow noise at all ISOs but nothing dramatic.

Let's keep in mind that the A7RII is about to be replaced and a new body (A9) will be introduced. It could be another game changer.

Should the files, and colours, be the same as from the H6D-50c? Accounting for different lenses of course. Colour accuracy was one thing Ming Thein mentioned as a benefit of the H6D (and Nikon DSLR) over the Sony system.

The profiles used by your RAW converter have a much greater influence on how the colours come out than the sensor/camera. But you can change the RAW converter profile, so you just need to find one that works for you (or create your own).

Well, yes and not, it is just not that simple. I have worked with Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax and Olympus files in 3 different raw converters, and the differences between say Canon and Sony colors are rather consistent across raw converters and color profiles.

It is more like I prefer a Ford over a Jaguar because with the Ford I can adjust the seat into a comfortable position just using the handles. With the Jaguar something feels awkward and difficult no matter hwo I try to use the handles. And now you suggest I take the whole seat out and build my own seat. Making your own color profile is very difficult to get robust and working in different light.

The existence of the larger 53x40 mm 100 MP Sony MF sensor is just what helps keeping me out of dumping that kind of money into a mini-MF system for landscape use.

What keeps me from dumping that kind of money is the possibility that Sony cameras will keep get ting "better" at the same clip as they have in the past, and that I could soon both have my cake (Hassy quality) and eat it (Sony price and useability)

Yes, I believe that waiting till the Kina is the wisest thing to do.

2 more musings. I was not impressed when Hasselblad commented that focusing through the touchscreen wasn't implemented at this time, but would be on cameras that shipped. Cameras today incorporate a lot of software, and keeping it robust and simple to use is a real job. Rushing to implement features at the last minute doesn't inspire too much confidence.
Also, on this thread, many people have declared themselves interested, even very interested. But I haven't noticed one who actually pre-ordered, even though in the US that is less than a full-scale commitment. That, again, is not really confidence inspiring.
Time will tell if prudence is indeed the right approach.

I had a look around on eBay and you can get a Phase One IQ160 for £9,000. It's an older CCD sensor, so it's useless at high ISO, but it's a "full frame" 53.9 x 40.4 mm, and it's 60 megapixels. If I am going to put a considerable sum of money into a new system, then to me this would be much more appealing than the new Hasselblad X1D or Pentax 645Z - go big or go home, as they say.

Flexibility isn't really something I would look for in a medium format system, as it will never fully replace a 35mm system - I would expect to be working with a tripod etc. if I wanted to travel light, shoot indoors / at night without a tripod etc. then I'd use the A7RII.

The one thing the X1D really has going for it (compared to the A7RII) is the leaf shutter, so if you want to shoot outdoors with flash while travelling for example then it's a good choice.

I owned the IQ 160 it's really a fantastic back. You can get ISO 800 out of it very easily. Has a 1 minute long exposure that's very good and has a lot of nice features. Focus mask and such but live view is very limited.

Folks also with leaf shutters which no one seems to be talking about is vibration and movement is very very low. One reason you don't need IBIS as there is no issues with shutter vibration. Besides the high sync which many Pros want there are some great side benefits over a focal plane shutter.

Matt the IQ 160 is maybe one of the best tech cam users back. Has very few issues like magenta casts over the IQ 180. It's. Dalsa sensor as well , excellent neutral color but your not going to get live view. So depends on needs here

That exact sensor has 3 variants P40 plus, IQ 140 which are crops of the IQ 160. I bought all three that's how much I liked that sensor. Need any help there let me know. Many many images from it

I ve been down that CCD road but now I prefer the CMOS for live view and bump in ISO. But that's me after 5 CCD backs I want to go in the CMOS direction. Only because I've been there done that and really for no other reason. I want small more than anything. So don't let that comment turn you off from it. Those are awesome sensors and backs. I loved them a lot. Really have some of my best images from them.

So this morning seems like Sonys sensor factory is behind with delays from there earthquake and may affect any new release. Not good news coming out of Japan. Not sure if this also affects selling to 3rd party venders like Hassy, Nikon and so on.

Guy, that just allows us to keep our money under the mattress just a little bit longer.
