Past week Mike Lentz( fellow FM member) and I visited several lakes in Minnesota looking for Loons, Grebes and other water birds. Over one and a half days we found plenty of Loons, many Red Necked Grebes and a breeding colony of Western Grebes.
Mike- thanks for being a good friend and a great guide.
This is my first set of loon images.
Loons are very territorial and will defend their turf fearlessly. A family of Red Necked Grebes that I was photographing drifted into a nearby loon territory. What unfolded was something I have never seen before.
1. The first image shows both the habitat and the photographer. ( courtesy of Mike)
2. Loon sees the red neck grebe and assumes this aggressive posture.
3 ,4 and 5. Loon goes after the red necked grebe. Fortunately the terrified Grebe was able to escape the attack. without any injuries.
Wow! Absolutely brilliant set of images Harsha. Great low perspective from your shooting position in the boat, well done.
2-5 are so unique, what a terrific behaviorial sequence you captured.
The family pics are wonderful also, and all against beautiful BG's in equally beautiful light.
Masterful work Harsha... you got my vote.

P.S. Looks like the D500 performed very well, especially in the attack sequence. I just received mine today and was very impressed with the AF system on some bird test shots in my backyard. This camera will be a joy to use.

Your planning, technique, patience, and execution here are superb.
As good as the D500 seems to be I don't imagine just anyone could have produced these images.
I can't quite figure out what lens you have paired with the D500; looks like some great glass also.
A delight for me to view this morning.
Thank you very much for the kind comments. The lens in the picture is 200-400 paired with 1.4TC. The attack sequence was taken with 600FL lens with1.4TC.

Thanks Kirk. I cannot wait to see what you come up with using D500. AF is the best from Nikon so far( don't have aD5). However I had one major problem with the camera. It gives a card error message especially with the SD card. QXD works the best with only one or two error messages. Shutting off the camera and reinserting the card correct the problem. It is annoying and I am hoping that Nikon come up with a solution. I am using a Lexar latest 128 GB card. I tried different cards but error message continues. I think it is a firmware issue. In fact I lost few images of a loon flapping sequence due to card error. It is possible I turned off the camera before the images were written to the card in the excitement.
