This is a fairly rare fungus called Amanita strobiliformis:

I'm pleased with the way the D500 performed, white balance is perfect, metering not bad, I dialled it back 2/3 of a stop but I'm not sure it was needed.

Here are several images from last Saturday at Seafair in Seattle. These images were taken with the D500 and the latest Nikkor 80-400mm lens.

The last image was heavily cropped. That situation did result in a crash on the last race of the day. I was following the lead boats, and the subsequent crash fell out of the frame, unfortunately. The driver was not hurt badly.
