Too many birds in this thread - there are lots of creatures hiding in the woods to be hunted with a D500 - 5-point AF-C AF-ON instant lock even with a TC on the 200-500mm for f/8.0 wide open. My D600 was just hunting wit that same lens setup

Can you spot the car in the woods?

Hi All. Posted below are some of my results from using the D500 over the summer. I think it is a game-changing performer in the DX realm. FYI, the deer photos were taken in the Smoky Mountains, so the fog is the "smoke" for which the park is named. Most of these are completely unedited and were just exported using Lightroom's presets. The owl on a branch is actually at ISO 8000, and I did selectively sharpen and reduce the noise for it. I couldn't be happier with the AF and the IQ at high ISO is absolute icing on the cake.

This owl image is at ISO 8000--I did do some selective NR and sharpening:

I wish there was a thread for D500 images taken with focal lengths shorter than 200mm and other than birds/wildlife. Everyone keeps saying that the D500 is superior to almost every body other than the D5, yet I rarely see any of the usual images that you see with many full frame bodies (portraits, landscapes, etc).

Well, the D500 is aimed more at birders, wildlife and sports, hence the frame rate and the super fast AF. This is not to say it isn't for other purposes, but you can use a D7200 if you don't predominantly shoot birds, wildlife or sports - you don't need a D500. So, with that in mind, you will get much more people who have the D500 that shoot birds, wildlife and sport on here.

As for the D500 being superior to every body other than the D5, I think that is a bit of a stretch. For birds, wildlife and sports, I would say that the D500 is a better bet than my D810, but for everything else I will still take my D810 for overall IQ.

@myboostedgst, my D500 is assigned to street, event and studio. The principal lenses are the 17-55/2.8, and also the kit 18-55 as used below @ 27mm.

I have a wedding gig next week, so consider yourselves warned.

I agree 100% with your assessment Lance. I love the beautiful IQ my D810 gives me in both landscape and portrait work. That being said, the IQ of the D500 is very, very good for a crop sensor and the AF system is superior to the D810 and a joy to shoot for sports and wildlife.

As long as you don't have to crop your files, the D500's image quality is quite good. Dynamic range holds up well into higher ISOs too.

Lance,

Great shots!!
Great detail.

Were there decent crops in this goup?

I am sure the quality of the lens has a lot to do with the great detail.

Thank you very much for your lovely comments, mfrank. Much appreciated!

There were mostly minor crops up to about 20%, except the kite on the branch which was a square crop and possibly up to 40%
