After lots of back and forth, last week I sold my trusty Nikon 70-200 2.8VR and bought the Sigma 50-100 to go along with my Sigma 18-35. I was finding that 70mm was a bit too long for chasing our seven year old twins around. Also our oldest daughter plays DIII volleyball and softball so I'm very excited about using this lens next fall for VB. It should be a very useful focal range on my D7200 shooting from mid-court. Obviously I lost quite a bit on the long end so I am looking for a used/refurb Sigma 120-300.

Too bad my 120-300 OS is a Canon mount. Local Sigma is selling off 120-300 at an incredible price less than 2K

Last week I found a Sigma 120-300 Sport on the Buy/Sell Forum. I'm loving it so far. Paired with the Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 I think I'm set for a while.

I have a similar kit sitting in my house right now except it's the 150-600mm Sports. I LOVE the 50-100mm.

I had the 150-600C for a couple weeks and sold it. It was great in good light, but evening softball/baseball games were obviously tough...the 120-300S is awesome, but I could definitely see myself re-buying the 150-600 for birding and daytime sports.

Since March I have purchased four Sigma lens, retaining three of them:18-35, 50-100, and the 120-300. It's something I had been planning for a while. I really like the 50-100, but it is taking some time to for me to get used to the focal length. Before, I used my 70-200VR for nearly everything outdoors with the kids. I do find 50mm very handy, but 100mm a little short sometimes. Just a small adjustment needed on my part I guess.

Thanks a lot Mark. That's my 17 year old headed to prom a couple weeks ago. It was in the low 50's and the wind was howling. We were fortunate to find a spot to grab a few outdoor pics.

Finally had a chance to shoot with the Sigma 50-100 1.8. Liked it a lot, big and heavy but hard to beat that 1.8 aperture. Favorite shot:

Quite a few shots on my blog with it, have to check the Exif info on the page because I was also using the Sigma 18-35 1.8.

Thanks for sharing your site Batty_F. The 50-100mm is on my lust-list but quite a bit far from my reach at the moment. You have some wonderful work on your site and it seems this lens is about as good as it gets for DX.

...oops, a bunch of Sigma lenses to go for starting from this 50-100, then 18-35 for D500 and perhaps 24-35f2 for D800

Good comments on this lens. I have always like Sigma lenses. A Sigma was my first lens I ever bought for my D100 many years ago. The thing I can't get past with the new lenses is the focusing rotates the opposite direction of Nikon lenses. They're more geared to Canon users, even though they make and sell for a lot of Nikon users. I always found myself turning the zoom ring the opposite direction, thus missing shots.

I actually discovered the Nikon version is like other Nikon lenses.

Someone said this lens is heavy. How heavy it is compared to the Nikon 70-200 f4 and the 2.8? How fast is the AF for action shots? Might be a good lens for my D7200.

It's not for the squeamish. About the same weight as the 70-200 f2.8 VR II
An inch shorter and a bit fatter (82 vs 77 front element) AF is brilliant on my
D500/D7200/D810 the latter in 1.2 crop mode. It's off to jackpot barrel races
