p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Eastern Sierra at Dawn

This was my second time at this location. I prefer shooting at sunrise at lower temperatures as the steam interacts with the cold air creating a nice effect. I have captured it lit by moonlight before but this time wanted to get some dawn colors. I hope you like it.
Taking with A7RII and new FE 24-70/2.8 GM zoom, a power combination.

There are 2 compositions taken moments apart: The first is at 28mm horizontally and the second around 40mm vertically. Which one do you prefer?

Definitely the horizontal one for me. The vertical just feels like it cuts off too much.

Fred both of these are pretty neat but I prefer the horizontal. I like the way the river which is more revealing brings you into the image I also think having more of the mountain range is more engaging. Beautiful shots regards Dean

Fred,
These are both excellent. That's some beautiful light you captured. I've shot this scene at sunrise but never thought about sunset. Hard to pick but I think I prefer the vertical.

I really like the horizontal shot Fred! It places emphasis on the mountains, and has a calm feeling to it.

I preferred the horizontal approach also. Both are nicely done. How long ago?

I like em both. I think the horizontal wins, but the vertical simplifies the image in a good way.

I love the horizontal perspective. I always go horizontal unless I have to go vertical when it comes to landscape. Very beautiful comp and conditions. Excellent post processing...

Okay - I'll be the odd one here. I prefer the vertical. For me it's a cleaner subject (tighter view of mountains & river valley), less clutter in foreground, better capture of sky color and the steam complements the pic better - whereas in the horizontal the steam cloud is a little overbearing. BTW nice pic!

I like the vertical better. better leading lines, better balanced and more focused subject.

Fred, both are great! I slightly prefer the vertical composition. It just looks perfect to me, including the sky and clouds. Wonderful images!

Very nice!
I recall seeing this scene when you were testing the sigma art 35mm?
I prefer the vertical as it removes the vegetation on the lower left and the larger fence posts on the right. In the distance, the center mountains has all the action. Vertical looks cleaner to me.

Love the horizontal but somehow am more drawn to the vertical. It pulls me into the scene more, more focused on the essentials maybe?

I prefer the horizontal image by a country mile. The vertical image is too narrow and elongated for my taste. I have a feeling that this ought to be a square image by rights.

Horizontal is, I think, the better composition.

Great picture!!
