Landscape orientation for me for this spectacular scene. Real treasure spot.

That's a great shot. The vertical one would look awesome if it were framed at the end of a hallway

Fred,
These are both excellent. That's some beautiful light you captured. I've shot this scene at sunrise but never thought about sunset. Hard to pick but I think I prefer the vertical.

Dave, this was actually shot at before Sunrise. I've never been there for sunset but I'm planning to do so during my next visit. Thanks for your comment.

I really like the horizontal shot Fred! It places emphasis on the mountains, and has a calm feeling to it.

Thanks for your feedback Ben!

I preferred the horizontal approach also. Both are nicely done. How long ago?

Hi Jim,
I captured these images last week.
I was skiing at Mammoth Lakes with the family and escaped for the good hours.
Take care,
Fred

Both are superb images. However, the horizontal image works better for me. This is certainly a wall hanger, Fred!

Horizontal is my preference. The steam is floating to the right and so the eye moves with it. So the more that you can capture to the right of center, the better.

I like them both as compositions (with some edge on the vertical), but I do think the colors are a bit too vibrant /contrasty for my tasting. Either the reds or the blues in the sky need to be dialed back a bit imho

Horizontal image for me, so my eyes can trace the water's path. Love the color and the purple haze...

Beautiful shots! If i hadn't seen the horizontal, i would have still loved the vertical but the horizontal wins for me.

Okay - I'll be the odd one here. I prefer the vertical. For me it's a cleaner subject (tighter view of mountains & river valley), less clutter in foreground, better capture of sky color and the steam complements the pic better - whereas in the horizontal the steam cloud is a little overbearing. BTW nice pic!

Fred, both are great! I slightly prefer the vertical composition. It just looks perfect to me, including the sky and clouds. Wonderful images!

I recall seeing this scene when you were testing the sigma art 35mm?
I prefer the vertical as it removes the vegetation on the lower left and the larger fence posts on the right. In the distance, the center mountains has all the action. Vertical looks cleaner to me.

Love the horizontal but somehow am more drawn to the vertical. It pulls me into the scene more, more focused on the essentials maybe?

From the posts so far on the thread, you guys prefer the portrait orientation version. I've learned a lot from your feedback. Thank you!

Interesting question as I seem to always go back and forth myself. I like the vertical in this case but I think my normal unaided eye is used to seeing more horizontally in the sense of peripheral vision.

The vertical feels limiting in a horizontal sense although it feels more dynamic to me looking up and down the valley.

If none of that makes sense it's because I can't make up my mind.

I think if you had presented the vertical first it would have broader acceptance between the two. The vertical gets closer to what I feel is the subject, which is the meandering creek and the Sierras/Sky in the distance, the mist helps with the mood, helps hide the trail fence but also adds to the dead area in the horizontal. I also like more of the FG in the second. I would clone out the "No Swimming" signs as well.
Great view Fred...

Beautiful colors and great location. I think I prefer the vertical as well, definitely something to hang on a long hallway like someone mentioned earlier.

Both wonderful images Fred. I do prefer the vertical one for the cleaner and more balanced composition. I think I would prefer the horizontal if there was some cropping on the right for a more balanced image.

Beautiful images as usual Fred. Got one of my votes this week!

I think the horizontal is better as there is so much more to see. However, I've notices that portrait orientation doesn't present well on the average home monitor either. I can rotate my Dell, but I never do....

I'm inexperienced with landscape photography but the vertical stands out more to me. Stronger focus on the creek leads to the mountain. Of course both are beautiful shots.

Hey Fred,

That's an area I still haven't shot in that direction. I like the horizontal the best, but think there is a bit to much magenta in the ground layer.
