OK, one last video to clearly illustrate the noise. People keep saying the audio gain must be too loud (they need to lower the volume on their end -- This is straight from my iphone to youtube with zero production value)
Here is the side by side comparison of the Sigma 50mm Art on my 5D3 vs. the 85mm GM on the A7RII with the latest 3.1 firmware... and having shot with the 85mm all day yesterday. (At the Formula D race in Long Beach, which I am happy to say, you totally can't hear the lens focusing in that environment).
A the end of the video, when you actually take a picture, we can hear that audio level is on the high side. We all know how the A7RII shutter sounds in normal audio levels. However, your videos are very helpful illustrating the that 85/1.4's AF is definitely not quite like other FE lenses.

Lol. I'm playing with it now. AF seems a little better. Hmmm noise and tension still there though. It's usable until stock comes in. I'm going to have my dealer send me one and I'll return this one. It's possible this could wear down and become normal. Have to shoot it more and see if that starts to happen. I can't damage it any worse than what it is anyway. What kills me is this thing is so damn good. I'm more bothered by the tension I feel in manual mode, it's like grinding down metal with a nail file
Guy, your copy may be defective but I believe that the 'tension' that you feel is the motor engaging when using focus-by-wire. Yes, even though it's focus by wire, the motor helps move the glass back and forward. I'm used to the Canon 85/1.2L II and it works similarly.

Precisely why these tests are bassackwards, the audio needs to come from the internal Sony cameras video! We can pre-set the levels in-camera, shoot a video clip with this and other lenses and do a proper semi-scientific comparison against other glass. We need a videographer to test who has access to a few copies.
EDIT: If the audio is recorded internally on the Sony body it would also prove OR disprove the manual focus points Guy is raising. If the 85GM cannot be manual focused without adversely affecting the internal audio that makes it un-fit for purpose of cinematography in its current condition, and therefore, there may well be an issue with this batch.
Not to mention this issue is becoming circular where the same person/people are quoting the same thing on various forums, the forums are referring to the same comment over and over and bloggers are referring to the forums - it's like a game of 'telephone'.
maybe we need a separate thread or a poll for the noise issue so we can go back to having a fuller conversation about the lens on this thread.

So the question to users with a good lens on manual focus doing the full swing from close to infinity do you hear any noise at all and is the tension the same on that rotational path. Mine seems normal until two meters than I feel grind, more tension and noise than when I get close to infinity or the end it goes back to normal. Now it does the exact same thing when in AF as well. It's like a garden hose thread in the middle it's chewed up . Same with inside of the focus ring it has groves that rotate it around. There is where the problem is its grinding. I also see inside thos 3 groups of 2 slots looking to the outer side walls below the rails metal shavings as I rotate the focus ring.

This is the real problem people are talking about the AF motor which is not part of the issue. Sure it makes it s normal sound. You can hear it clearly when turning off the camera. This issue I have is quite loud. My zoom for instance I can barely hear the focus motor
Anyway I'm going to return mine when there is stock. As far as this issue on the internet I have already been called a million names and I'm a parnoid weirdo. Yea some people are morons, I'm trying to help others but no respect, so screw them. Not here though everyone has been just fine but some of these forums are nutso. Anyway let nature take its course we have better thing to do folks. Like shoot some great images and Fred stop sending me the rain over here. Weather pattern is California than Arizona. If he says he has bad weather I get it two days later. It's raining now
apologies if someone posted this already, it appears that af is almost totally silent and extremely fast-faster then on the Batis-on non defective models http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/57584559

Interesting.
Fact is, two thirds the FE mount cameras 'functionallity' has little to do with traditional 'still photography' yet these early testers are predominantly 'social media based still photographers.' Do those guys ever consider multi-media usage?
I've got a shout-out to a trusted member of the pro video media community to get his take on all this 'noise', we'll see what he comes back with. If this lens wasn't marketed with an eye on the video community (with its de-clicked aperture ring) I suppose we could draw a comparison against the 85L -- but we cannot -- the 85L's a still photography lens and therefore it doesn't matter if it rattles during focus.

that "guy" you're referring to walked into a store and tried it at the counter. the guy he was replying to also claimed his copy was "SILENT".
i'd place about as much stock in his thoughts as the idiot who though the 85GM felt like it weighed about the same as the Batis.
owning both and having both in my hand at the same time, i can say that the Batis is noticeably faster in focusing, completely silent and feels like a feather in comparison to the 85GM.

Hi Mike, appreciate your input as someone who shoots video, that's a reassuring comment about the silent copies!!!
sounds like it (: this also confirms a friends' report who happened to get his hands on one during the NYC presentation, silent and crazy fast focus.....
sure thing, I am gettin mine tomorrow, looks like there is a batch of bad copies floating around, sux...
this thing has to be fast and silent otherwise, what's the point?
lol, ok, yeah, I will wait for my copy. I returned the batis because of its sluggish focus and hunting in low light, didn't hold a candle against my FE 55mm...if the 85mm GM behaves as you describe it, goes straight back to the store

lolz..you're expecting the 85GM focus faster than 85 Batis? really. wow...

you sure about that? there is no way for it to be crazy fast focus to move that much of glasses.
c'mon now guys, we are talking a lens here and a few oz (grams) of additional glass, not bricks on a construction site and fork lift capabilities, if I fork over 1800 bucks for a newly designed lens in 2016, I want af to be blazing fast, accurate and silent, too much to ask for?
