Guy,
Your FE 28/2 vs 24-70GM at 28mm matches pretty much what I see a infinity distances. The FE 28/2 is a great alternative to the GM zoom at 28mm as long as you stop down to f/8. (BTW: Gets a little better at f/11 in the corners but than the center loses micro-contrast)

Your Loxia 50/2 test differs from mine though. Did you check your L50/2 for decentering?

Yea thats what seems odd to me you got different results with the Loxia 50. Ill double check everything with the Loxia

We have been matching very very closely on everything except this focal length. Mine seems stronger at 50 or I have a weaker Loxia 50

I use ND/CPL filters or CPL filters alone for shooting streams and waterfalls, not sure if that's your use case. But until Breakthrough comes out with their CPL/ND combo filters (2 filters in 1), I've come up with an approach which seems to work for most of my lenses that seem to be limited to a single filter (haven't tried the 24-70 GM though.) I use the Breakthrough ND filter along with a Cokin Pure Harmonie Polarizer...and just leave them screwed together as a set. I then use a Breakthrough CPL alone when the lighting is dim enough. The Cokin is so thin, it's worked pretty well together with the Breakthrough ND on lenses that seem very finicky about filter thickness and vignetting. And of course the Breakthrough CPL alone doesn't vignette It saves me the time of unscrewing filters, fiddling with step up rings, etc.

Breakthrough was talking about releasing combo filters, which I imagine would solve the problem. But I haven't seen any recent news about it. Nisi makes some, but they are not multicoated.

Looked at the breakthrough photography filters and they are looking great too (expensive)

Haida system is cheaper but also bulkier...

I looked at:

X4 Neutral Density - 6-stop 82mm ( in combination with Smooth Reflection app if need more)
X4 CPL

Would I be able to use both on the 24-70GM@24mm without problems?
Would I also invest in a protector filter like X4 UV ?

Not seeing anything weird all corners seem to match at any given aperture. I might have to try another test for it

The Loxia 50/2 and its simple planar design has a better chance to be perfectly centered. I have checked three of them and they were all great. It's possible that the Loxia 50/2 is optimized for infinity distances. Mine even beats the 55/1.8 at f/8 for landscapes.

Regardless, the GM is surprisingly really good after f/4 and excellent at f/5.6 throughout the entire image field.

Between the Tenbas its 3.5 versus 5.5 width. That would help

The Peak bag they have the dimension different but looks like exterior 2.5 inches longer but 2 .5 inches smaller in height which is actually not bad and a little wider. Hmmm

the reason i'm giving the PD a try is the 4 position latch that looks like it will provide variable sizing - which would solve the problem of bags being just a bit too small or just a bit too big - if you can make it just right every time you pack it up. check out the video - very ingenious dividers expand as well:

Really does look pretty cool. Looks like i could get most of my gear in it too in not all. I would keep the Tenba for travel though and small things

Tim Tashley over at my place is having a issue on the right side around the infinity mark . So I sent him my whole initial test raws but I never posted these and what the heck. I don't think I did but why not if so.

But this is a response to Tim

Tim I sent you these two raws but thought I would show folks. I focused on the roof in both of these . I was half holding on to my grandson when I shot these at 43mm at 4.5 one would think kind of sketchy in the background, I mean I'm not at infinity but yet clear as a bell across the frame and it could be better

Now this one the background should be soft at 70mm focused on the roof at 4.5 and the background is a touch soft no doubt but still pretty amazing as this is the weakest focal length of the zoom. From tests at 70mm F8 for the corners and F4 for the center. Personally I would be grabbing my 85mm after 50 anyway but hey its there so if you can use it why not and the dang house is sharp.

BTW 15,00 square feet for 2.2 million

I started to compare the FE 24-70/2.8GM to the C/Y 35-70/3.4 here:
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1423138/4#13521296

So far, I only posted extreme corners for the 35mm FL.

Thanks Fred and Guy for again a lot of work from both of you...seems like both of you have a great GM copy...

One (stupid) question, it seems the GM lens is dropping resolution beyond F8, is this because of diffraction already?

For landscape I should use F11 to F16 to get everything sharp?

I tried a DOF calculator on the web.

Do I understand correctly that it's impossible to get the complete picture in focus?
If I use 24mm the max. difference between F8 & F11 (far limit = infinity) is very small

F8 nearest focus = 48 inch
F11 nearest focus = 40 inch
F16 nearest focus = 32 inch

This means the first 40~50 inch will not be in focus with far limit infinity?
Does anyone understands what I'm trying to ask?

@Dorkooken
Resolution drops after f/8 already with R2 due to diffraction.

Correct. We see this a lot in Medium format smaller pixel pitch( plus higher Meg sensor) with higher quality lenses equals diffraction sooner . I see it in both the GMs , Loxia 21 and 50 as well at F11 for sure. It's starting at F8 but hard to notice. totally okay though at F8 . I would stop down to F11 though if DOF is more important though.

Medium format going from 60 Mpx to 80 Mpx with a smaller pixel pitch sensor in the 80 diffraction was about a full stop sooner.

Someone asked me this as well on my forum. I'll just copy that text here

Tim I have 3.10 . The wall shots are all manual focus. The shots over the valley are AF. Most of my junkyard stuff is AF also. Where I have had weirdness is at 70mm. My 2.8 can be awesome and than I had a few duds.at F4 it's perfect on center. Seems like 2.8 to F4 I have a pretty big jump in quality. I did mention this during my wall test at the 70mm setting I was having some trouble focusing it there. All other focal lengths I have not noticed anything strange.

Now my 85 is very noisy it's going back for a exchange so I think it's actually has some type of gearing issue. So been careful with that so I'm hard pressed to confirm or deny on the 85 whatever is being reported because I don't have a perfect copy mechanically. Optically it's really really good and I have had no issues focusing per say but I can't confirm its perfect because the lens is not. But I have been nailing 1.4 shots on a regular basis as well as many others and the first I have heard of this . Source is also suspect if you ask me as well. Little to much crying wolf about Sony products. It's gotten real old if you know what I mean. Let me add until it's confirmed by Sony itself than I will just continue to not pay attention. Members and owners here have not even breathed this issue. Also we are talking about one lens not a group of them under test.

But if you read dearsusans comments than that's exactly what I have been saying all along about the 851.4. At 1.4 slightly lower contrast at 1.6 it's starting to really pop. It's actually two lenses in one which is what I like about it. Don't want to speak for Fred but he has been saying the same thing as well.

I heard the sharpness comparison of Sony 24-70 GM and Sony 24-70 F4 is

Center : 100 vs 95
Edge : 100 vs 75

Would the one who has both lenses likes to share experience ? Thanks a lot.
