Thank you for those detailed tests, Fred.
I didn't expect the GM to match any of the Zeiss or Sony CZ primes like the 55 1.8, but for a zoom it looks quite good. Thankfully, I'm not in the market for a standard zoom .
Just out of curiosity and because I haven't used any standard zooms in what feels like ages, how does the GM stack up to other 24-70 2.8's like the version II of Canon's 24-70?
That's my question, how does it match up against the Canon. I thought my Canon rendered a more pleasing image than my L primes. But to date, all the early testers haven't really looked at how the GM actually renders, especially on the wide-end at maximum aperture, there the Canon was beautiful. You mention the FE 1.8/55, that's my go-to Zeiss, a lovely lens, but I find its rendering a little harsh, hoping the zoom looks a little more subtle in those OOF transitions.
One thing to keep in mind here is there is really no direct light hitting the fronts if these houses but more from directly above so I think we would see even better micro contrast out of the zoom . It looks really good but I bet we will see better as well in different lighting. Fred also faced a lot of haze too.
For sure the 24-70/2.8GM performs better at the edges when compared to the Loxia 35/2. I know that because I tested these 2 lenses and the prime does not come close to the RX1RII even at f/8.
