I use that lens almost exclusively in AF-C mode and it focuses fast enough to follow active birds as I hold down the BBF button - that's all I need. It can easily be fooled if I try to follow the bird as it moves behind a tree branch, but the EF400 is a full-time manual override lens - unlike any of my Sony lenses - and it's very easy and quick to tweak the focus back onto the bird behind the branch.

I've only had the Extender for a few bird outings. I got it for extra reach at lakes where I can't zoom with my feet. In those situations it is easy to use a monopod. Without the monopod 560mm FL is harder for my old shoulders to keep steady. This combination replaced a Tamron 150-600 and I have a far higher keeper rate now.

I have had only occasional success with BIF, but that's just me - I'm an old man. I have no better luck with my Sony FE70-200/4.

Focusing from minimum to maximum is so rare in my use that I don't recall how long it takes.

I have two questions,

How long does it require to focus from the close up limit to infinty with and withoutvthe Canon 1.4x extender?

Does AF-C work in a useful manner?

Thanks, I appreciate it! I think the Canon 400/5.6 will do what I need. Nice to hear that the 1.4x TC works as well. That gould be useful sometimes.

I only got the adapter about an hour ago,but with the limited testing I did. The A7II and Canon 200mm 2.8 seems to work just as good as the MB V. I'll will be doing more testing in the next few days and will update the post, but performance seems good.

Has anyone used the MC-11 running the October firmware release (or later) with the Canon 24-70 2.8L (original mkI) and the Canon 70-200 2.8L (also original mkI) lenses? If so, how well do they work? Is IS functional on the 70-200?

For anyone who has used either of these lenses on the MC-11, have you also used them with the Metabones IV? If so, how do they compare?

(I just got the AR7 II; already owned the 70-200 and was looking at getting a 24-70. So, obviously it's a choice between the Sigma and the Metabones, and I'm trying to figure out which would be best for me.)

I'd get the Sigma.

I have used the 24-70L original, and focus is accurate and very snappy. I'm keeping this lens, the A7RII having given it new life.

I don't see why the 70-200 wouldn't work well, including its IS, as all modern EF lenses with USM and STM have done fine.

Thanks, Gunzorro, I appreciate the info.

The reason I asked about IS is that I saw at least one user reporting an issue with both lens and camera stabilization ceasing to work after the October firmware update. Now, granted, the one example I could dig up again wasn't with the 70-200, but rather the 35mm F2 USM IS: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4071451#forum-post-58563524

Tried the MC-11 with the Canon version of the Tamron 150-600 G1. Not really usable.

Tried the 85 art with the mc-11, but Eye-Af says not available with this lens.

Sounds like outdated firmware on the MC-11. You need at least version 1.02 to be fully functional with Art 85.

I wonder if any of you guys has tried the MC-11 with a Canon 24-70/4 L?. I bought this lens last week and I’m using it on my A7II with a Commlite adapter. My other Canon lens ( 40/2.8 STM ) is fine with this Commlite, both in AFC or AFS using centre point or flexible spot. Instead, the 24-70/4 struggles much more to get focus in less than ideal light conditions and, what is worse, sometimes the pictures are clearly out of focus in AFS, an issue that never happens with the 40/2.8 STM.
I was hoping that the Sigma MC11 might be more reliable and consistent concerning hunting and AF accuracy. Not that I complain about the Commlite; for what it costs it’s a steal and it’s well built (no play or wobble at all) but there’s no free lunch, it has some annoying shortcomings. For instance, you can change from AF to MF without problems but if you try to go back to AF, the adapter doesn’t recognizes the lens anymore and you have to switch the camera OFF/ON to restart working correctly.

I updated the firmware straight out of the box. All of the the other focus features appear to work well, but eye-af gives the invalid lens notification.

The Commlite is a cheap (though solidly built) adapter but is frustratingly unreliable. I use it on a A6000+70-200/f4L IS lens and sometimes the VF just goes blank. Forget about AF, just use it for manual focus.

I have the MC-11 and the Sigma 85mm ART and eye AF works well!! The above two images that I posted was using eye AF!

Thanks for the input. Yes, I know that we can't expect wonders from the Commlite but, as I've said, AF works remarkably well with the Canon 40/2.8 STM and it's just acceptable with the 24-70/4 L, once you know the shortcomings ( no low light conditions, no fast moving subjects, etc).
I did a Google search and the couple 24-70/4 L + MC-11 seems a mixed bag, from the scarce info I gathered. Some say it's mediocre at best while others say it's quite good.

I no longer use my Commlite or Fotodiox AF adapters since getting the MC-11. Besides much better AF with almost all lenses, the Sigma is much less prone to internal reflections that cause hazing or reduced contrast.

I think the choice for top IQ is between Sigma and Metabones IV T. So far, I'm happy with the Sigma for performance and price.

I lined the internal side of the Commlite with mate black felt and no problems so far with reflections. I also found that it works best ( up to a point) with AF-C and 'S' flexible spot setting. Anyway, probably I'll order the Sigma MC-11 from Amazon. If it doesn't outperform clearly the Commlite ( with the Canon 24-70/4 L) it goes back to Amazon and no harm done.

I have a Commlite and recently picked up an MC-11. The Commlite was terribly inconsistent with a 24-105L (mk 1) and AF wouldn't work at all with an 85/1.8. With the MC-11 and latest firmware they both perform almost as native and are very usable. Not all focus modes are available but other than the lock-on modes I hardly miss them. I think you'll be quite pleased with the MC-11, hope it works well with the 24-70/4.

Anyone using the MC-11 with the 35 Art able to comment on edge sharpness? (Specifically, does the adapter induce any softness not present on a native body?)

Thanks

After doing some more research, it turns out that I may have been using it wrong. I was trying to turn it on in menu,, and was getting the invalid lens message. Apparently I just need to hit the ok button when in continuous af, and it is supposed to work. I'm gonna try it out later today.
