p.33 #1 · Nikon D500 Announced

Bill Claff's D500 dynamic range analysis is out:

http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Nikon%20D5(DX),Nikon%20D500,Nikon%20D7200

tl;dr the D7200 is better below ISO 400, the D500 is better above ISO 400

For most, that's great news. Can't see many people using this below 400 anyways! Thanks for sharing!

I haven't noticed any lag at all with mine. Very snappy, just as fast or faster than my D810. Just curious, were the people on DPreview shooting with SD or with XQD cards?

Same, no lag, quite snappy. There isn't even much lag over snapbridge, they're to the phone right away. I am also using an XQD, though. That said, any modern SD of consequence should be as fast in this as the D300. I tend to not trust folks on DPR all that much.

Really enjoying mine!

It's only a hair less than the D7200 and from what I've seen, both can take a 5 stop push, which is more than 99% of people will need. The fact that it's typical Sony DR is all most people wanted to see I think, so that's good.

Anyone tried WiFi without using snapbridge? And, does the WiFi work with DSLRDashBoard?

BIll also detected what appears to be raw-based noise reduction in the D500's black frames (link).

From p354, it appears that the WiFi only works with snapbridge. If correct, not good.

If that's correct it's worthless.

Workin' on my settings (usually a 2-3000 click process) but
after my 1st outing I'd say AF is probably about 20% faster
with the 200-500 zoom. Sport and 500 f4 VR up next, would
appreciate a cessation of the freakin' wind. Stay tuned

I uploaded some video to my YouTube channel of the sun setting over the Severn River in Annapolis, MD last night. I used a gorillapod to keep the camera steady, but otherwise, no additional equipment used. Sound was captured using the microphone built into the D500.

Wow! This should make the sportsma really fast! I hope it will also help to better focus on low contrast subject! I am so excited, hoping I'll have mine in time before my trip to calgary in June!

Just picked mine up today, dealer received it on the 21st and I had them ship it to a friend in Gardiner, MT since I'm on my spring Yellowstone trip.
Quick setup came as I did laundry then I showered, stuck it on the 500 f/4 and headed into the park...no fine tuning or anything else done yet. 1600 ISO

I must be doing something stupid, which is possible, but mine does not work with SnapBridge or otherwise

Snapbridge registers successfully with BT/NFC via snapbridge and then when I try Remote operation or download, both of them report WiFi error

A few more shots with the D500 from my outing yesterday, just using the 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR lens.

p.33 #20 · Nikon D500 Announced

I have only had the D500 for a day and haven't had much opportunity to get out and really give it a proper go. These are just some quick snaps, one is out my front window of the Rainbow Lorikeet supping on out Banksia Tree nectar early in the morning. The other down at the park of a Purple Swamp Hen late in the day.

Both converted through Nikon NX-D and then tweaked in Photoshop where I used Noisware noise reduction to reduce noise. I haven't done any real comparisons with regards to noise compared to my D810 and it is too early to say whether it has better noise than the D810 when the D810 is cropped to match ie an apples to apples comparo. I am reserving judgement at this stage until Capture One Pro (my preferred RAW converter) releases their RAW algorithms for the D500 and I can then get a real feel for how it compares to the D810.

As for using the camera, gotta love that 10fps, that's good fun. All in all, works just like the D810 other than the frame rate. It's a solid, well built camera, the shutter/mirror is quite quiet and all those AF points are great. AF speed is quick and accurate. Overall, an excellent camera to use - so far as it's only early days.

Rainbow Lorikeet

D500 + 400 f2.8E FL VR, 1/100sec, f5, ISO2000

A more pleasing composition - a crop for better positioning:
