Curious if many interested in this camera have used the RX100 mk3/4 and its pop-up EVF ?
They are quite nice for what they are, but, far from enjoyable to use. Much smaller than the A7 series, especially the latest A7rII, which is quite nice.
To put it in OVF terms, its like looking through a APS-C entry level camera finder vs a good classic FF film camera.
This isn't to say a smaller EVF isn't useful. I make use of mine on the RX100 quite a bit, and its way better than nothing at all, but would I want to shoot all day like that ? No way.
Again, cool to have it, but would I really use it, and more so enjoy it enough, to want to sell my RX1 and upgrade ? I'm thinking no, because while it sounds great in theory, I can't help but think I'd have some buyers regret, especially at $3300.
Some of the others features also seem nice on paper, but for my real world usage, not sure I'd find them worth dropping another $2k or more.
AF speed for example. Yes the RX1 isn't super quick (but pretty accurate). I've often said I wish it had faster AF, but when I really think about how I shoot the camera, faster AF really wouldn't change my style of shooting with it.
I'm thrilled the A7rII has faster AF, and when I'm doing something with the 70-200 for example, such as kids running around, its great to have (though still not perfect mind you) Am I going to do anything like that with a 32ish mm RX1 lens ? Probably not.
I mainly use mine for travel and posed photos, when I don't want to take a bigger camera. So static landscapes, family members posed in front of stuff, etc. Certainly not how everyone shoots their I know, but is the current AF ever making me miss shots ? Honestly no
I've been on record saying how I'd surely buy an RX2 for years now, but its funny, since its finally came out, I'm really not reaching for the credit card.
I think part of this is that the A7rII is such a great camera and handles most of my photo needs quite well, allowing my current RX1 to serve as just that speciality travel type tool for when I don't want to carry anything else.
Could I do nice landcapes with a RX2 ? For sure, but wouldn't I prefer my A7rII and 16-35 ? Most likely.
So the RX2 would sort of be filing the same little niche as my current RX1, but at nearly 3 times the price, when I consider what I'd get selling the RX1 and then buying the new one.
Still cool tech tour de Force from Sony though, just as the first RX1 was.
Honestly still hard to believe the first RX1 packed as many features as it did, and now we have 42meg FF sensors in a body about the size of a larger P&S ? That is simply amazing how far things have come....Show more →
Good points.
The biggest feature for me is the tiltscreen. I don't even need an EVF anymore, but now it's built in, essentially making the camera even smaller. No longer do I have to attach/detach the clumsy external EVF everytime I go out shooting.
