As far as I can tell, there is no way to use the back button (AEL) for regular AF on the RX1 series. So, regular shutter button for AF and AEL button for EyeAF.
i use the top c button for AF on my rx1 classic, i'm pretty sure i could have the AEL button assigned for that instead (i have it set for exposure lock)?
you have to have the switch set to MF in order to decouple focus from the shutter. will that not work on the new version?

I think the issue is new af-c mode, and the eye AF apparently only working in that mode when the AF is also active...
If one has the AF on the shutter it would be easy to then just have Eye AF on the AEL and hold both, but I don't like shutter tied to AF myself
For AF-s would work to have AEL serve as AF on, and center button as EYe AF, allowing the option to pick either as needed depending on subject, but for AF-c holding two buttons and then also needing to hit the shutter to take the shot seems near impossible

I played around with different configurations for a couple of days and this is what I ended up with, although I too would prefer to decouple AF from the shutter button.

I'm not sure if I understand what you are saying. I don't have to hold two buttons and the shutter for eye AF. Pressing the eye AF button (for me, it's the AEL button) focuses in both AF-S and AF-C. In AF-S, the little green square pops on then off when it finds an eye. In AF-C, the square follows the subject. When you get the composition you want, a quick snap of the shutter is all that is needed.
side note - this is fun to do when watching TV.
side note 2 - a benefit of the thumb grip - sliding the thumb over puts it directly on the AEL button.

I'm pretty sure this is the case when using Eye AF when it does not see a eye it automatically jumps to normal AF at what size box you pick for focusing. I'm almost positive it works like this on the A7rII. I would think the RX does as well.

A couple points:
1) On the RX1RII I can't assign the AEL button as "AF On". (No option for that)
2) There is no option for EyeAF on the center button.
With these restrictions, the best option is to have EyeAF linked to the AEL button and regular AF (AF On) on the shutter (Default setting). It's not ideal as I don't like to have the shutter linked to AF but it is what it is.
The RX1RII menu is slightly different than the A7RII, so don't expect to have identical settings.
EyeAF works the way dandrewk described: just hold the AEL button and press the shutter (while still holding it). Works in AF-S and AF-C. In AF-C is continues tracking the eye as the subject or camera moves.

We all love the RX1RII bokeh rendering but the circles are not as clean as I would like because of the aspherical element. It looks a little better than what I get with my FE 55/1.8 but it's nothing compared to the clean bokeh balls from the Loxia 50/2 planar design.
Here is an example. My Christmas tree in the back.

it always seems more noticeable with monochromatic light, i usually don't notice it with white bokeh balls...
