How about half cases? I see that the mark 2 moved the tripod mount and size is slightly different than the RX1R, making the previous cases incompatible.

What are some good options at this point?
I would wait. The new official Sony case works out well, but it's $250. I'm testing it out and going to decide whether it's worth keeping or not.

I'm using the Hejnar photo # D-23 - I have tried the P&S RRS but it's a bit large for my taste (Obviously I will get an L bracket when it comes out) I tried the china L bracket with out the L portion and although it fit I did not want to damage the bottom on the camera (dent) however I'm sure you could modify with a little grinding

Does anyone have both cameras still and that can show a side by side pic of the tripod mount. I'm trying to get an idea just how much its shifted, and if its simply lateral, or if the fore/aft position also changed.
In some of the pics, such as Jeff's, it still looks pretty well centered right under the lens
My grip/L-bracket combo looks like it can accommodate a slight lateral shift by just making the tripod screw hole into a slot instead of a centered round hole. Take about 15 seconds with the Dremel drill.
If its also moved backwards though, then that would require a fair bit of modding and probably would be easier to just wait for a new version to come. Could make add a little JB Weld to the base of the grip, and then drill that out, and I would expect it to work, but if we start seeing some $20-30 options hitting the market, might as well just wait

Anyone experiment with the sweep pano mode ?
I found on my original RX1 I'd sometimes get some visible bands in the sky and less than perfect results. The resolution was a bit lower than I'd sometimes like as well, though worked for most stuff.
Since moving onto the Alpha camera's, I've found the feature has become quite well implemented and produces great results. Also on the A7rII, the resulting pano still has better resolution than my previous manual stitches.
Certainly are plenty of software tools to manually stitch pano's these days, but the in camera results, when good, make things so quick and easy.
Given I'd be giving up my A7rII and 16-35 and VC15, my ultra wide needs would have to all be done via pano's, either in camera, or manual.
Thought about picking up a A6000 since they are so cheap, and a 12mm, just as a dedicated wide too, but then that sort of defeats the point of getting the RX1, and the "advantages" of carrying just one camera.

I much prefer taking a few shots and merging them in Photoshop's photomerge. The sweep pano function has automatic exposure controls and I always prefer shooting in manual mode.

Personally, I never use anything but PTGUI Pro. It's really quite easy with default settings and will produce better stitched, more consistent results than in-camera or Adobe solutions.
Then, if you need more control over distortion, ghost control, final image resolution etc., it's all there.

Dang that is one small camera. I was never fond of the thumb grips because I need the hot shoe. But I would definitely want a camera grip of some sort on the front.
Guess this begs the question , is it actually too small.

Guy regarding the grip, you need to keep in mind how your other Sony's are set up. If you like to use Eye AF, you have to hold down the button that it's assigned to and depending on which button you use, it may keep your thumb busy.

I have to spend some time fiddling with handling this weekend. I got both the thumb grip as well as the official case. It's been some time since I had my RX1, completely forgot how it handled. With the x100S a thumb grip was a necessity to get a comfortable, reassuring grip. With the RX1, there is a decent grip on the back of the camera for the thumb.
Have to try the camera bare, the camera with the leather case, the camera with the thumb grip, and the camera with both. I do like that the official Sony case can hold the camera with the lens hood as well as the thumb grip and still close. But if the camera is good to go either bare or with just the grip, I may send back the case.

Email from RRS on the plans for an L Plate- Looks like China off brand will be the first out no doubt
John,
Thank you for your email. We have not made any final decisions regarding a specific plate for the RX1R II. I will certainly pass along your interest and if you know of any others interested in this camera, I encourage them to send us an email.
Feel free to keep checking back for updates and please let me know if you have any further questions.
Cheers,
Emily Tong

I'd recommend the Desmond DS-1 Bi-Directional Arca-Type QR Plate which costs USD13.95 at B&H. This plate has a slot rather than a screw hole and can be attached so the battery cover opens fully. Here it is on my camera (please excuse the crummy mobile phone photo).

Question to new owners of the RX1R2.
In manual focus mode, is the DOF/distance scale on the screen any different from the original RX1? And does the focus distance remain the same (and not reset) when turning off/on?
p.44 #14 · Announced: RX1R II with 42MP sensor and EVF
I have both an RX1 and an A7II. I am thinking of getting an RX1R-II mainly for its superior AF and EVF, but I fear that it will make my A7II look bad and, hence, drive me to get an A7RII. I am really quite satisfied with 24MP, but the usability issues of the RX1 have me yearning for something better. Am I overthinking this issue? Will I still love my A7II?

Can't speak about DOF scale, as I never owned the RX1.
However, the manual focus resets to infinity when the camera turns off.
I suspect that's just the way it is with focus by wire. I wish the RX had true manual focus, but that probably would have added size/weight. Compromises...

What, a passionate photographer overthinking an issue relating to gear? No way!
I never owned the RX1, but I do have the A7rII. If you are anything like me, you won't like the A7II any less, but you won't be using it nearly as much as you used to. No reason to.
The RX1rII is addictive, and once under its spell, it won't let go. Luckily, it makes pretty good pictures.

There is absolutely no doubt that the RX1 offers class leading image quality - Without question. I would really struggle however without the ability to set zone focus. Setting zone focus on the Fuji X100 was an absolute dream. The point is this - The RX1RII is a very expensive tool but it should offer better m/f ability for the price - Having said that , if I happen to have any cash windfall , I would surely buy one. For now however , it will be the A7Rii and that lovely 35mm m/f loxia.

I'm the opposite way of thinking. I see it as a very expensive camera, but one that (apparently) offers quite fast and accurate AF, including Eye AF, which I really have grown to love.
Certainly this isn't to suggest that just because its good at AF it also can't have a better MF implementation, but, I for one certainly wouldn't be interested in spending anywhere near this type of money for the camera if it didn't offer good AF, regardless of how perfect they may have made the MF/zone focus experience.
I've really never liked zone focus, seeing it just as a work around, either for poor AF, or my ability to not MF fast/accurately enough.
I mostly shoot wide open, upon where the Sonnar really sings, so setting it to 2meter and f11 doesn't really hold much appeal.

But the RX1R-II has the same sensor as the A7R-II, so the IQ difference is not as great as with the A7II. I am very pleased with the IQ that I am getting right now and would hope not to be spoiled by something better.

Unless you print large, or do some serious cropping, you won't see much difference in IQ between the RX1 and RX1rII. It's the same lens, but on a camera that (for most) is much more usable.
However, I understand totally about the "yeah, but what if...". That tiny shadow of doubt can eat on you. The A7rII is a serious upgrade to the A7II, so depending on you finances, it may be worth it to you. Piece of mind has no price tag.
