p.36 #1 · Announced: RX1R II with 42MP sensor and EVF

Is this a known fact, or is it an assumption? Do we know there is no 35/2 RAW correction in camera? This is almost routine for smaller mirrorless cameras these days

yes, unlike leica and µ4/3 the distortion correction of RAW requires you to check a box in LR for the lens profile correction. if you open the files in RAW converters designed to ignore such things the distortion is the same as with that LR box left unchecked.

There are some good examples on the net of Leica Q raw files developed with Iridient (which ignores corrections) versus Adobe (which makes them). It looks like the Leica is actually a 25mm or 26mm lens that has a fair bit of curvature and vignetting and the "baked in" corrections crop it down to 28mm. It works well though so I don't think the Leica should be looked down on because of this.

Leica bakes in their corrections in the RAW file. Sony does not.

I'm not a fan of baked in corrections. Nice for JPEG shooters but for folks that process there files I would rather have that control. My problem is it may not be what I want on ever image so your force fed. Not a fan of that

I'm looking forward to real world samples and don't take this wrong, I am also not even remotely a fan of DPR testing at all so I never read it nor there forum for that matter. But that's me and I know folks like that place which is great , I just have issues on how they test and such.

So for me I want this thing, of course coming up with the cash is another matter altogether but if I use it in conjunction with my A7rII on gigs I really think it may work for me. I'm also going on a small warpath. I turn 59 in a couple weeks and after all these years I'm just flat worn out from the weight and bulk of these systems. My back is just shot.

lets not forget the rx1 lens has much smoother bokeh than the Q, i'm sure that costs something in terms of lens correction. also, the answer is no the Q does not have as good a corners as the original rx1 at infinity from the comparisons i've seen.

Yes, I know. I have seen distance side by side comparisons as well between the original RX1 and Q. I have also seen (as I'm sure you have) how much correction is applied to the Q lens. No way you would shoot that camera without digital correction (as you can the RX1).

Scroll down to the end with the RawTherapee example to see the almost fisheye native distortion of the Q lens. Click on the image to enlarge and one can even see the edge of the image circle at the corners which turn black.

http://leica-q-blog.com/2015/08/21/comparing-apple-camera-raw-to-adobe-camera-raw-for-processing-leica-q-files/

Correcting that degree of distortion digitally results in loss of sharpness where the correction is applied the most.

I'm doing all I can to save weight/bulk. The thought of carrying this around without having to carry around lenses is liberating. I can imagine it being easier to chase the kids around with this as opposed to a system camera, no matter how small and light the a7rII is, the 25 f/2 is noticeably smaller than a 24-70 on my a7rII. Already got my thumb grip in, placed an order for the new updated case from Sony (expensive as hell), and will wait for the camera to come in before getting the rest of the accessories.

I'm hoping the Fotodiox grip for the Rx1 fits the new camera. I'm thinking it will.

I just wanted to say "thanks for everyone's input" on the DPR test. This thread as well as others on some other sites have been very informative. I was pretty worked up after reading the test results on DPR. I have the RX1RII on order and have been anticipating this camera for some time (I've had the RX1 and the RX1R). The Sony RX1 series is a great series of camera. I love the size of the camera and the amazing output!!

I am looking forward to the next RX1R!!

Yes also hoping the fotodiox grip works on the new model. If it does, I highly recommend it to anyone considering the camera.

Don't listen to half the stuff you hear or read. This should be a great purchase and if not than not a big deal you can return it or sell it to me real cheap. Lol

Seriously ignore the BS. First off many folks don't want this to be a success as it goes against there fanboy brand which I can never figure out. The A7rII is a huge success and this should be as well our beta days with the A7 series are over with it issues . Now we are buying real product that just flat out works. This little cam is going to be special.

Exactly. Who the hell takes photos in the real world of test charts anyway? What exactly is the point? 99% of those who said on the other forum that they would no longer be buying the camera because of the results (a) didn't understand the results; and (b) were never going to buy the camera anyway.

+1. I try to ignore Dpreview. I'm far more interested in what hands on reports will be here and if those who upgraded from the RX1 feel the AF improvement is significant.

Far more important to see what experienced users of the current model think plus some real world shooting. All I need to know is is AF is up to date with the A7rII as i know the sensor is . Im not at least concerned. My issues are usage in the field bouncing between both cameras if it works okay. Im not worried about the camera itself

I've found the the current RX works well, but not great, in a professional workflow, using either my DSLRs or Alpha bodies. It simply handles differently enough to cause some slow down, barring issues of no EVF, slow AF etc on the current model, which don't need to be addressed as they should be rectified to some extent. I honestly don't think they will fully be solved though because I can already envision things like the rubber Eye cup falling off during a wedding shoot when trying to manage other camera bodies and things of that nature. Murphy is a $@)&! sometimes lol.

I've mainly used the camera for special applications so has where I need fast flash sync for outdoor work. As a dedicated took it works really well.

Using it and something like an A7 series as a two body system really doesn't end up working the same as having two Alpha bodies, one of which with a great 35mm focal length, at least based upon how I shoot. I see the RX1 as a 3rd body type of role.

Not to knock the camera, for I do quite enjoy it, but if Sony made a Zeiss 35/2 in FE mount, I would hands down prefer to own that mounted on my A7rII than the RX1.

While there is a lot to enjoy about the RX for what it is, really I own it because it's a great lens. The leaf shutter is cool, but not a must have for me. Smaller size really doesn't make it break it either, not like it fits into pockets after all.

If I could have its rendering and overall IQ, and also gain faster AF, IBIS, better grip et al, it would be pretty ideal

To each his own though, I've used my RX100 in a "pro" environment doing product work, so I certainly don't want to rub anyone the wrong way and make it sound like I'm talking in absolutes.

I'm sure there is probably a link out there somewhere to some photog that does amazing paid work shooting weddings etc with just a single RX1 that can put my work to shame. There will always be exceptions to any statement lol

That being said, the RX1, just like other otherwise fantastic camera's I've enjoyed owning like the Fuji X100 series, just doesn't mesh with my way of working.

I've taken the X100 on tons of trips and got great shots, as have I the RX1, they are very capable imaging tools. Trying to wear the X100 around my neck while I also used two DSLR's ? Didn't add anything and I'd honestly come home with maybe one shot from it.

A7 series on the other hand I found actually worked pretty well paired with a DSLR. Doing a few corporate events I paired the A7II with wider focal length with a DSLR with a 70-200/2.8 and bounced between them nearly as easily as using 2 DSLR's. Different control layouts but I felt both proved quick and intuitive to control (once I set them up per my needs)

When I've thrown the RX1 into the mix, I would find that I found it easier/faster/more streamlined to just change lens on my A7II than to use the RX1 as a second body for the 35mm focal length.

I really enjoy going out with just the RX1 for leisure shooting though, handles pretty well when I'm in the mindset of working specifically with it, and its limitations.

I think there could perhaps be more overall bang for the buck adding a relatively inexpensive A7II to a A7rII, for 2nd body shooting needs, and then picking up an original RX1, for the single body leisure/travel type camera, verses spending $3300 for a RX1rII and trying to use it to fill a 2nd body role.
