I took a few test shots today. I much prefer the 35/2 rendering and bokeh at f/2 is smoother and less distracting when compared to the 35/2.8. Colors are bolder and contrast is higher as well. I boosted contrast (+15) and vibrance (+15) for the 35/2.8 shots. Still, not as good as RX1R.
Here is a few shots. Both have been corrected (Profile)
RX1R (f/2.0) on the LEFT for all.
Thanks Fred for the comparison.
For clarity - you mentioned that you boosted clarity and contrast for the FE35/2.8. Is that what we are seeing on the right hand side, or do both images -only- have profile corrections?

I subjectively like all 3 of them best, depending on the specific image.
The RX1 certainly is the smoothest, but sometimes I don't aesthetically find that the "best". The last image of the tree trunk with vine for example, I actually prefer the 35/2.8 FE's overall rendering, yet at other times it can be a bit "busy"
All 3 are very nice optics for their respective price (and other attributes) though, and paired with the 35/1.4 FE Sony has quite a lot of choices for photogs in the semi-wide to normal focal length.

The RX1 is incredibly smooth, but I like the contrast in the 35mm 2.8 images. The 28mm f2 looks great as well and very similar to the 35, but quite a bit wider

I'm also impressed with the 200g compact FE28/2 lens regardless of the price. Sharpness (center/mid), contrast and color look great. I did some quick tests getting the lens closer matching the RX1R focal length (which is less than a foot closer), and background blur looks very similar. It can also focus closer than the FE35/2.8. (Not as close as RX1R though, especially in macro mode)
The A7R+FE28/2 is about 600g. Only about 100g more than the new RX1R II.

Also, RX1 has the least amount of vignetting, which i didn't expect. 35FE is the worst of the three. And i kinda like distortion in 28FE, looks like very light version of the fisheye lens

Given at retail prices its a few hundred cheaper, and a stop faster (not to mention pairing better with the 55/1.8) I don't know if I'd of gotten the 35/2.8 FE had the 28/2 existed.
The 35 is a little more compact and has a cool hood, but Sony hit something of a sweet spot in the compromise between size/cost/performance with the 28/2.
I'm really hoping for a short tele in the 85-100mm range, and hopefully f2.0, coming in around $500 for the FE system.
Nothing wrong with the amazing Batis 85, or the 90 macro, but the price can get a bit steep when every system lens cost over a grand (something not true of just Sony but other systems as well)
I'm really in favor of a renaissance of compact, semi-fast, pretty good optically lenses that aren't too outrageously priced. Something were folks can put together a 2 or 3 lens kit of classic focal lengths for less than the price of a single lens.
That is how the hobby used to be back when I was shooting the OM and Canon FDn systems. Lots of reasonable choices that got the job done. Then the market shifted to two extremes, cheap crappy zooms, or high end gear for the pixel peepers with little middle ground.
Keep in mind that these images were not processed at all. They are screenshots from my LR window (survey mode). So, they were not even properly resized. We should only pay attention to FL differences, rendering, vignetting and bokeh for this test.
Also, the 35/2.8 images were shot with a A7R and 28/2 with A7RII. Exposure settings were identical for all cameras but I had +0.7 exposure compensation for all three. When post processing and fixing exposure/sharpness, colors and contrast will get much improved.

Fred thanks for doing this test. It tells me a lot. In all honesty and no offense to any owners of these three. I'm just not sure there is one I would keep. I like a combination of the three. I like different elements of each. Maybe I'm just to darn picky

Okay good . Thanks Fred maybe why I'm not screaming up and down since they are not processed out.
