Ah, thanks, that would be useful, to see what you get if you demand a certain resolution. Using APS-C or any other predetermined size for such lines would be artificial though.

RX1(R) has the crop 50mm mode in jpeg only. It is too bad they don't have apsc raw crop. The new RX1R M2 camera has 4:3 and 1:1 views. 1:1 view is close to apsc crop width. Similarly 1:1 could be useful with A7R II with the apsc lenses but Sony doesn't put these in each of these cameras.

1:1 aspect ratio!? Holy moley, isn't that just the icing on the cake? I won't have to crop the 42mp image to 28mp, the camera will do that for me. And I'll get 50% more shots per card.

I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want it for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true oh
All I want for Christmas is an RX1R II

When comparing the RX1R against the FE35/2.8, the RX1R lens is noticeably wider. I would say about 32mm.
That means the new 4:3 aspect ratio would bring it close to a 35mm equiv. FL.

Is it still wider after the lens profile correction in post?

Could you please post comparison examples? Very interested how the difference looks in pictures.

I took a few test shots today. I much prefer the 35/2 rendering and bokeh at f/2 is smoother and less distracting when compared to the 35/2.8. Colors are bolder and contrast is higher as well. I boosted contrast (+15) and vibrance (+15) for the 35/2.8 shots. Still, not as good as RX1R.

Here is a few shots. Both have been corrected (Profile)

RX1R (f/2.0) on the LEFT for all.

looks like the rx1 also has less loCA, is that true?

No surprising results. My eyes appreciate you didn't try the Loxia on the A7.
Fred, the RX1 Sonnar lens is about 32mm, as you mentioned. If nobody here is very surprised it's because it's known since the RX1 was introduced and reviewed.

Jonas,
Yes, not surprises here. Although I was expecting these differences, I thought that comparing them side by side would be useful.

I won't be able to test the Loxia but will be testing it against the FE 28/2 (should be here tomorrow).
If the 28/2 is truly 28mm, the FE angle of view won't be too much wider. I'm interested in testing bokeh rendering between these 2 lenses wide open.

I think the actual focal length of the Leica Q is closer to 26mm also. Funny how all these fixed lens cameras are wider than advertised.

I would only consider this camera for its 35mm FL but it was disappointing to learn we don't have 1.5x crop option while shooting RAW. I love that option on the A7 series and 42MP would be useful for that.
Many don't care and prefer cropping in post but I much rather compose in crop mode.
On the other hand, the new 4:3 and 1:1 aspect ratio options are very welcome. The 1:1 would give us a 28MP RAW image with an equiv. 44mm FL.
I'm wondering if we will get the new aspect ratio options for the A7RII as firmware upgrade.

I actually worry about the pop up EVF, it may attract dust

It would be great if the new aspect ratio options for the A7RII were provided in a firmware upgrade. But I'm not holding my breath. The RX1 series cameras and the A7 series cameras are designed by two separate teams that probably regard each other as competitors. Human nature (and politics) suggest that the A7 team might reject the the RX1 aspect ratios simply because of the not invented here syndrome.

As for the FLs, it seems as though the 44mm focal length for 1:1 aspect ratio is based (approximately) on the image diagonal, which I don't regard as a particularly useful way to calculate equivalent focal lengths. Wouldn't one be concerned most of the time with the equivalent horizontal or vertical field of view? In other words, for a given subject distance, what full frame lens (for a 24 x 36 format) would match the RX1 series camera's field of view when set to 1:1 aspect ratio? The calculation is simple: the sensor dimensions have "shrunk" to 24 x 24 (two-thirds of the full frame dimensions). Therefore the field of view must now be equivalent to 32mm x 1.5 i.e. 48mm.

Rui Salgueiro's field-of-view calculator agrees:

a 32mm lens with a 24 x 24 sensor has a horizontal field of view of 41.1121 degrees
a 48mm lens with a 24 x 36 sensor also has a horizontal field of view of 41.1121 degrees

I'd argue that the difference between 44mm and 48mm is nearly as significant as the difference between 32mm and 35mm. Or am I missing something?

It is a possibility but the same was feasible for the pop-up flash.

When I first calculated this, I thought that 1:1 would indeed provide a 1.5x crop (horizontally or vertically depending on the image orientation). The number I posted above was borrowed from the Sony specs.
I believe that your 32mm and 48mm (uncorrected) are as close as possible to reality.

When comparing the RX1R vs FE35/2.8 lens, I noticed that the RX1R has very noticeable barrel distortion that when corrected robs the edges of the frame. So, corrected, we could approximate this to 35mm and 50mm (1:1).
The FE 35/2.8 in comparison has almost zero distortion.

Has anyone tested a true 35mm (if there is such a thing) for angle of view...maybe the 35 f2.8 is really a 38.

I'll bet that the RX1 team would like their design brief expanded to include a model with a 50mm lens.

It seems as most lenses deviate somewhat from the declared focal length. The Leica 50mm R lenses, for example, are generally longer than most other "50"-mm lenses.

When the (indeed great) SMC-Pentax FA31/1.8 Limited was introduced it turned out to be about somewhere between 32 and 33mm by the guys who claimed to know how to calculate such things. I don't know how it is with the other two lenses in the original "Limited" series (the FA 43/1.9 and the FA77/1.8).
When used with the Sony A7 the FA31/1.8 will give you nearly the exact same AoV as the corrected RX1-images do.
