p.21 #1 · Announced: RX1R II with 42MP sensor and EVF

i think it's mostly a matter of what and how you shoot. there's no real image quality complaint with the rx1, though more pixels are always nice for landscape. better usability for different types of shooting is the main advantage of the new version.

The performance of the lens with the high resolution sensor is why I am now considering the new camera while I had little or no interest in the original RX1 or RX1R. Now the new camera will exceed the MP of my A7r and I am now interested in using the new camera with the Superb 35mm which will outperform and quite likely replace my Minolta CLE 40mm f2 M-Rokkor lens. Team that up with an A7rII and my A7r along with my lenses and this will make a killer system for my needs.

Its amazing that some people have time to actually use their cameras to take actual photos of things, with the amount of time that is seemingly spent testing and looking for issues.

I get that these aren't inexpensive purchases and all, but there seems to be a real analysis paralysis anymore, perpetuated by internet forums and fear mongering.

I mean look at DPR for example, half the threads are about "bad copies" of a given lens, and its like that across platforms, so not just Sony QC concerns.

Used to be that someone would buy a new lens, go out and shoot it.

Little secret I don't go past the first page at DPR. I never read the forums and im a far better person for it. All that place does is put doubt in people's mind and just makes everything negative. I could go on and on but for me I want to be around nice people . I find that here and I find that over at my place. That's enough for me and I learned to just walk away from threads that are negative, argumentative and all that. There is nothing learned except getting pissed off at people. Rather just avoid it

p.21 #3 · Announced: RX1R II with 42MP sensor and EVF

Weird: my first thought on the rx1r ii is that it is crazy expensive and not justifiable, but the more I think of it the more tempting it is. Here are a couple of random thoughts that sort of coalesce into rx1r ii as an answer for me:

1. ever since the rx100 iv was announced I have been very intrigued with the notion of a pocketable high quality P&S. The tiny size gives it more potential to be available and usable at all times.

2. For a long time I've been undecided, but wanting/needing a high quality 35ish mm lens. Earlier this year I tried and loved the FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA, but after posting images here on FM fellow forum members noted that the optics were defective, so I returned it and haven't had the heart to give it another try. Then the new Canon model was announced. Optics look excellent, but it's big and even more expensive. And, of course, Zeiss recently announced a new Otus 28mm f/1.4, which will no doubt have awesome optics, but weighs as much as a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. I've tried the FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA. Love the size: decent optics but don't love the rendering. Don't want the MF Zeiss Loxia. There is also the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art and new Tamron 35mm f/1.8 that are decent options as well. Tried and did not love the Canon 35mm f/2 IS.

With those two different thought considered together the rx1r ii starts to make sense for my needs and wants. i have always had the greatest admiration for the images from the original rx1 and was in fact really disappointed that Sony didn't make a similar FE 35mm f/2 ZA back when the a7 and a7R were first released in late 2013. Anyway, the rx1r ii has got me thinking...

Millsart, I owned 2 of the most maligned cameras in recent years. The Canon 5D II with its abominable AF and heinous banding, and the A7R, totally ruined by vibration (shuttershake). And while the Net was full of drama, owners kept getting great shots from both cams, which sold by the boatload. Goes to show...

And here I also thought the 5DII was the workhorse of its generation: absolutely nailing some of the best images, from the best photographers (far better than me), in sandy, rough, warzones in the M.E.-- and getting me killer results and two-page spreads in big newspapers and glossy mags (not to mention paying for itself so many times over that it was the bargain of the decade for me).

I'm with Fred on this: I've wanted an RX1 since that camera came out. When I can get a functioning one (including AF/MF working; MF ring failure seems to be a big issue, maybe design flaw?) for at or less than $1K... I'm gonna give it a go and see how it slots into my system.

It's either that or an A7r + 35mm something (unless Fuji or someone else makes a great move soon), but I'm inclined towards the size of the RX1 and the combo that the sensor and lens promises.

I'm intrigued by both this and the Leica Q. Obviously, the RX1R II has a bigger sensor but 24mp is enough for a compact I feel and I like the idea of a fast 28mm lens with very quick AF. I sense the Q will be a killer street photography machine while the Sony may be more of an all-rounder. Glad to see that Sony has integrated an EVF in the second generation RX1 but I am still leaning towards the Leica, not least because I bet it will hold value much, much better than the Sony. Well let's face it, most things do given Sony's machine gun approach to new product launches - blink and you might miss them.

One curious thought I had. When the RX1 first emerged many people, including me, were absolutely shocked by the ticker price and assumed it was merely a test concept which would not sell in any volume. Now a mere couple of years later I am completely unfazed by the pricing of either of these. Very odd. Must be getting reckless in my older age.

Oh yes justruss, the MF ring is badly designed. I've close to three years of experience with the RX1 and learned my way around the problem - but it doesn't work that well for all situations. If a perfect (personalized) RX1 is what you want I'm afraid you've better start searching for something else.
I really tried that. I bought an A7 and tested a variety of 35mm lenses with it. I had no luck though, as documented in this thread here.
I sold the A7 (ergonomics, no good enough 35mm lens available). There are more 35mm lens options available today but the size and/or rendering of those puts me off.

I purchased the EF version of the Tamron SP 35/1.8 because I was unhappy with the size and weight of the Sony FE 35/1.4. Luckily I didn't know that the Tamron 35/1.8 + Metabones EF->E adapter is almost the same size and weight (705g vs. 704g) as the FE 35/1.4. Looking back I can't believe that I thought that a lens with a 67mm filter size would be appreciably smaller than one that takes a 72mm filter. But it turns out to be one of the best "wrong" photographic choices I've ever made. The Tamron lens has gorgeous smooth bokeh, focuses to 20cm (7.9in), and has a wonderfully damped focusing ring.

Which is just as well because the most recent Metabones IV firmware update isn't compatible with the Tammy. When I turn on the camera I get a black Monitor/EVF and have to unmount and remount the lens to force the adapter to recognize the lens. No matter, I switched to a Metabones III adapter and focus manually instead.

I have a number of Sony/Zony FE full frame primes (28/2, 35/2.8, 35/1.4, 55/1.8) but, if I were forced to choose one lens to use on the A7II or A7RII, I wouldn't hesitate in selecting the Tamron 35/1.8 (given that 35mm is my favorite focal length). I like the lens so much that, when it's released, I intend to buy the A-mount version to see whether it works better with the LA-EA3 adapter.

I've already posted some quick shots with the Tammy in the Sony FE Images thread but have since been caught up with work and family stuff. I intend to use this lens intensively from now until I get an RX1R II and then it'll be interesting to do some comparison shots.

With all that IQ, it only costs $599 new!

Can you you post a picture showing the Tammy+metabones vs the FE 35/1.4 side by side?

I thought about getting the Tammy but have read about issues with the latest Metabones.

When I received the adapter it was version 0.43. I updated the firmware to 0.44 and the autofocus improved slightly. Firmware 0.45 caused the problem I described.

Well the thought I had was if I had the metabones I could use the Tammy and I could add a canon 135 to the kit. If I could utilize two lenses from it than it makes some sense. Now I am on hold until we hear what Sony announces. My only issue is something over 85 and I'm in debate about my Sony 35 1.4 not that is bad , far from it. Great lens just big. Even though the Tammy combo is almost the same I get use from the metabones for other lenses. So this is a option

The weird thing is that looking down on the Sony and Tamron lenses from above, you'd swear that the Tammy was smaller. And, even though they're about the same size and weight, the Tammy "feels" smaller and more comfortable in hand.

I bought the Tammy knowing that there was a risk associated with the Metabones and third party EF lenses but the problem I encountered with firmware 0.45 could be rectified with 0.46. Who knows? Frankly I don't care since I prefer MF to AF and am delighted to have a good performing 35mm with auto-aperture that, as Fred pointed out, is significantly less expensive than the Sony FE.

Thanks for the comparison. They are very similar but if you like manual focus, the Tammy will definitely be better since it's not focus by wire.
I use the Metabones with my TS-E and EF135/2 lenses. At this price I'm tempted to pick up the Tammy 35/1.8 while waiting for a better native option.

My thought exactly Fred. The bonus I have a Canon adapter handy for the 135 which is another area not addressed yet from Sony. Honestly I'm a little tired of playing this temp solutions. The 70-200 f4 is not the answer for me. So I either need a fixed 135 or 200 at least 2.8. Corporate podium stuff I don't use flash and I need that speed.

Sony/Zeiss put out three native Zeiss 35mm options but we are not completely satisfied.
Yes, we want a smaller, fast native 35mm lens.

I think you would be happy with an used EF135/2. You would be able to resell it for about the same price down the road.
AF works great with the new Metabones firmware (minus eyeAF, which would be really useful at this FL)
It's sharp wide open. Bokeh and rendering are amazing.

As I mentioned in a previous post I'm intending to use the Tammy as my main lens for a month or two. So you can get a better idea as to whether it will suit your needs feel free to let me know if there are any particular test subjects you'd like shot.

Extra bonus the Tammy is 67mm filter which matches my converted VC 15, Batis 25 and 85. For the 55 I could use a step down ring. I just purchased the 67mm ND filter 6stop from Breakthrough photography which is supposed to be the best around. No color cast
Want to get a better polarizer too there out of stock

I am stuck with manually focussing mine on an A7 II - the EF 135 f2L - looking forward to Loy Khratong here in Thailand to give a more thorough workout. So, we are only seeing greater improvements in AF with the A7r2 + MB4 + EF lens combination? Any point shelling out for a MB4 on an A7r and A7 II? I also use the 135 f2L with a 1.4x II - but am yet to get in front of anything really worth shooting.
