I am trying to decide between the Sonnar 35/2 in the RX1 and the Canon 35 L II. From the few images I have seen, the Canon is rather similar in rendering, but a different beast altogether for better or worse: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1390393/0#13248925 https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1393178/0?keyword=35#13248792
Canon 35L2 is one of very few lens I feel really striking a good balance between rendering and raw performance. RX1 sonnar is as good. I wouldn't trying to look for bad examples for any lens, depend on PP and shooting condition, bokeh is very complicated thing. but there is still ones generally excellent and ones generally bad. And RX1 belong first group as well as new 35L.
my computer is too busy crunching numbers now to let me view my catalog but I can post some worst case images tomorrow. under just the right circumstances it can produce a less visible version of what samuli called coma from hell with his 55/1.8 I believe - not actually coma but a weird bokeh effect.

The most impressive thing for me with the Canon 35mm f/1.4L II is the copy-to-copy variation, or lack thereof (see the latest lensrentals blog post). Canon seem to have developed a way of putting lenses together much more consistently. By all accounts the lens in the RX1 is put together with a similar attention to detail, something which unfortunately can't be said of the FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA.

What does excite me is the flip up screen, and the possibility of using it as a very modern and extremely portable and petite version of my old Rolleiflex - cropping to square, with no real loss of resolution. I think the lens, when so cropped, would be roughly equivalent to the Zeiss 80mm f 2.8, though with not quite such shallow DOF.
I could also use an A7RII with my Summilux asph 35/1.4 and crop to square (any corner problems gone!!), get more or less the same FOV and DOF, AND use other lenses, all at the expense of a bulkier package, although I would also loose the Eye focus facility (unless I use the Zeiss FE 35/2.8 and loose more DOF control) - decisions, decisions...Show more →
This.
I can't kid myself any longer that the A7R + FE 35/2.8 is an adequate substitute so now I'm almost at the point of accepting that, as far as the RX1R II is concerned, resistance is futile: tiny unobtrusive camera, stellar 35mm Zeiss lens, flip screen (i.e. almost perfect Rollei/Hasselblad emulator), 28 megapixels when cropped to square format...
The only thing holding me back is the sensor dust issue that I've read about on the Internets. The RX1R II doesn't seem to have a dust shaker which means that, if the problem arose, the camera would have to be sent back to Sony for cleaning. Given that it's originally assembled in a clean room to very tight tolerances, I'd be worried about its being returned in optimum condition.
Or am I being a Nervous Nellie about this? Have FM owners of the RX1/RX1R had any problems with sensor dust?

I think most complaints are about dust that was already there when buying the camera. My first copy had a decentered lens and dust on the sensor. My second copy never had any issue. I don't remember ever seeing someone at FM with dust problems, but I could be wrong.

I've bought and sold and rebought this camera 3x over the years, and have been following this thread since it started. This is the FIRST I have EVER heard about the sensor dust "issue".

if harsh bokeh is your main complaint with the FE 35/2.8 i think you should really like the rx1 lens. i've never encountered a ~35mm so smooth, plus the corners are better too.
that type of stuff going on in the upper right corner of your second shot would never happen with the rx1.

ok, i got a chance to look through my library.
here's a full sized unedited image that i think is the worst bokeh i've managed to produce from the rx1 (i've taken tens of thousands of shots with it though so maybe if i look harder i could find more). shooting straight into the sun wide open with a fairly long focus distance really shows all the optical aberrations that are present.
the rx1 will never show the kind of corner funkiness that Fred's image shows in the corner because the bokeh is much more even across the frame than the FE 35. to get maximum funkiness you have to focus further away or have a closer background and it's still never quite like that.

In the archived Sony RX1 FF Mirrorless (fixed lens) thread you mentioned removing dust spots by placing a vacuum cleaner on the empty battery compartment. I assume this was the first copy that you then returned.

"Last month Jan 2015 prior to putting it up for sale I sent the RX1 to Sony Central Services for sensor cleaning as I could see a 'dust bunny'. Sony cleaned the sensor and to my shock fitted a new lens assembly because " they could see some dust that couldn't be removed". I was only charged the fixed standard fee of £117.00 for this (Phew)" http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/sold-uk-eur-sony-rx1-fdaev1mk-viewfinder_topic111459.html
"I picked up a used RX1 a couple weeks ago. Everything seemed to work great, but I noticed some dust starting to appear at F8 with typical post processing, so I decided to send it to Sony repair in for a sensor cleaning. A friendly Sony support person told me would cost $60 (including shipping both ways)." https://www.photographerslounge.org/threads/27822/
"There is 2mm of clearance between lens an sensor, and as this is not a zoom so it does not act like a baffle. But anything is possible. I had dust on my brand new one. The replacement Sony sent me has traveled to 7 countries with me in the last 6 months and just did an f/22 test and not a single speck." http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3513330
"Does anyone have experience with dust on their RX1 sensor?
I've had mine for about 3 months now and this annoying and quite big dust stain has appeared on my sensor. It dissapears at aperture 2 but is visible at any other aperture." http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3453775
On the other hand, Kevin WY Lee took two RX1's (the second as a backup) to a month-long festival in India.
"It took us approximately 4 hours to trek through the massive crowd back to camp, almost getting crushed at 2 junctions. 16 hours later back at camp, the RX1 was a lump of dust and dirt, but there was not a single speck on the sensor – benefits of a fixed lens, I suppose." http://invisiblephotographer.asia/2013/02/18/sonycybershotrx1-briefreview/
The more time I spend looking at the RX1(R) Image Thread and Flickriver, the more I realize what an extraordinarily versatile camera it is. I guess the best strategy will be to buy a new RX1RII and check for sensor dust immediately.

Indeed. A dew days later I noticed the lens was decentered so that copy had to go back.

It seems this thread is now populated by forum members who have already decided to purchase an RX1Rii and those who are trying to convince themselves not to purchase one.
I'm in the former camp and would like to get an L bracket. I'm wondering if any you original RX1(R) owners have any thoughts on the Really Right stuff L Bracket vs. the Milich grip and bracket. They both seem like they're well designed and well built and I'm not sure which way to go.

Jeff
When I sold my RX1r I kept the "Right stuff BRX1 bracket" and will be mounting it on the RX1rII if I ever get it...
It's compact, light and very well made. I got my used on Ebay for a very good price

I linked to the old "technical" thread on the RX1. I had (and have) the RRS grip. I like it in every way with one exception; it's slippery. The solution was easy though. I put some friction tape on and now it's anything but slippery. There are some pictures of it in the mentioned thread if you follow the link.
That said, I've very good experience by John Milich products through the years as well.

Okay I asked on my forum what the high sync was i got 1/2000th for a answer. I forgot it was a leaf shutter. So I thought about it and actually put pen to paper.
Here are my thoughts
That just about put me over the edge right there. Luckily the next few months are my(me, I can actually put gear money aside from prying eyes) money months. I will sell my 35 1.4 and get this. I know I said it does not make the best business sense and looking back at the beginning of this thread 4 or 5 folks said no than ordered it. I maybe joining them. Here is the thing outside the extra 2000 dollars buying and selling the 35. 1.4
Here are the Pros.
Maybe the best 35mm lens i can get my hands on
Exactly the same sensor as my A7rII so my files will be identical
Same AF module built in
Same uncompressed file
I can use my current Nissin and my studio strobes
Backup to my system
Serve as my 35mm lens
Serve as my get my *** out the door and go shoot. I actually need this one for my head. You get lazy after 40 years
My vacation camera which when I bring my system I wind up never even using it. No excuse camera
My grandson. Enough said
One in the oven. Grandkid, sex unknown.
I never buy a camera for me personally , I have no real Guy toy its all business gear. Hard to explain
One thing my system DOES NOT HAVE. A leaf shutter, thats freaking huge for me.
Maybe even smaller than my single 35 1.4 lens
Cons there is really only one that smacks me immediately cost. My ultimate answer to that. So how many lives do you have i get one not sure about anyone else. ROTFLMAO
p.18 #19 · Announced: RX1R II with 42MP sensor and EVF
Why not pick up a gently used RX1 right now and live with it for a bit while you still have your 35/1.4
If you end up loving the RX1 experience sans a bit of extra resolution, EVF and faster AF, then sell the RX1, likely for what you paid for it, sell the 35/1.4, and go and get the new RX model
Likely could happen, but also likely is that you might find the camera just doesn't fit into your professional workflow, or at least, not a $3300 fit.
Maybe a $1300 RX1 can be easier to justify as a professional tool for the leaf shutter, fast flash sync etc. Certainly don't need to use it as often if its "Just" $1300 right ? lol
Likewise, maybe you will find it works well enough for those non-paid shooting needs such as some vacation snaps. Again, banging a $1300 camera around socially leads to be a little more carefree than when its $3300, at least for me.

Wow, that looks very impressive for the cost. Thanks millsart!!
Its amazing bang for the buck, and super compact in size. I always leave it on mine, and love how the curve of the grip flows right into the curve of the body, essentially feeling like a 1 piece design
