I have no experience with those two lenses. In the end, I think it's a matter of how wide do you want to shoot.
For me, the 20mm was too wide. I would have gone with the 28mm, but the reviews I've read did not convince me. I hoped for a better 24mm, and I am very happy with this one.

Hi Darrin,
What other 24mm's do you have or have had? ( Inc zooms that include 24mm)
The 24mm AI-S 2.8 was my mainstay for 30 years on film and always a favourite fl - 28 never seemed quite wide enough and 20 was out of my reach on 1980. I currently have three zooms that cover 24mm - 16-35, 18-35 and 24-85. I think that at 24 the 18-35 may be the sharpest and I am wondering whether I would see a whole lot of difference between it and the 24 1.8g stopped down ( no sun stars wither the zoom of course).
1.8 would be nice sometimes but for me hardly a must have in a 24mm.
I had the opportunity to grab one of the first batch of 24's Photocraft/Diistrict Camera of Burke VA got but passed it up to hold on to the funds for a trip with my wife.

Hi Patrick,

I had the 24-120mm f/4, which was my main lens on the D700, although with pronounced vignetting at 24mm wide open. On the D810 it was softer, especially in the corners, so it went away with the D700. If you are happy with what you have, that's fine. I was missing something on the wide side, and Nikon does not have a modern 24-50mm f/4, or something similar, that I would have preferred. Even a 24-70mm f/4 would have been OK.

I can't stop wondering why, more than one month after releasing the 24mm f/1.8 G, Nikon has still not updated the distortion control data firmware, nor ViewNX-i / Capture NX-D, for this lens... Perhaps they are waiting for the 24-70mm f/2.8 VR to hit the stores

Here's a picture for anyone who cares to see what this lens will do wide open. I can't say it's super sharp. I've owned the 24mm 1.4G a couple months before I picked this one up and I'd say it's about on par at F1.8, which is to say that it's definitely sharp enough.

This is my kid who just turned 1. He's enjoying a korean rice cake for the first time.
