Uhoh7: I thought the claim was for the new version of the 21/4. Is yours the new or the screwmount version?
uhoh7 wrote: jhinkey wroteThe 21/4 VM is really quite good. Totally usable for sure on the A7RII.Sry, I don't believe it. Not personal, but if the 35/2.5 is terrible as has been reported, it's very hard to believe the 21 has good performance.
But I'm happy to be mistaken. A good infinity landscape with distant details across the frame is really the only way to tell.
The "test shots" which began this thread are no measure of lens performance with the issues these sensors have. Again no offense, always appreciate ebookman. Foreground is way too close. Please take the time to get up on a hill over something and be sure the foreground is at least 50 meters (more is better) away with complex detail.
Please take the time to do it right, and I will be the first to cheer if it's true.
Here is my test of the CV 21/4 on the Kolari A7i at f/8:
Note it's also easy to find the full size Obviously the lens is suspect in this case, though I'd need to adjust the focus for comparison. I would like to see it do better in a similar shot on the r2.
Here the same lens at F/11, and it's better for sure. But look close across the frame. It's a mess of crazy focus dips, especially evident on the right edge, mid-frame in the treeline.
This thread is like all the early claims about the A7S, and how it could shoot all the M glass fine. In the end we know the truth, but plenty of folks bought the camera thinking the early claims were true. But eventually the "test shooters" shot enough that the weirdness was impossible to ignore. But they had fallen under the spell of a close corner and distant center....Show more →

Pretty sure there's no optical difference between ltm and m mount versions of the 21/4, just like the ltm and m mount versions of the original 15/4.5 are the same, the new 15 'v3' is a new design. Maybe there will be a new design 21/4 one day, but as its taken pretty well a year to get the new 35/1.7 to the market I'm not holding my breath.

Convinced me! I saw Adorama was out of stock so I went to B&H's website and just picked up a 9+ condition VC15 III on B&H for $629! Perfect timing if I do say so myself

Nice!
I'm just starting to use mine, but so far so good - especially for how compact it is (even though it's bigger than the -II version):

I did really like the compact size of the VII, but on my A7r, the color shift was so bad it was really only usable for b&w. Price was a fair bit lower too which was nice. I think I got mine for like $450 or so...
That said, if a little increase in size and a few hundred extra dollars gives me a lens that is far more usable I think it should be a good trade off overall.
Haven't handled the new version in person, but certainly will seem smaller than the 16-35 I'm betting.

I too was put off by the significant (relatively speaking) size increase of the -III over the -II. But after seeing the optical improvements of the -III, handling both of them side-by-side, and using the -III a bit I'm pretty happy. Yes, keeping the small size of the -II would have been fantastic, but you can't have everything.
Hiking with the -III today on the A7RII its size/weight was just not an issue at all.

Back to the 21/4VM - here's a set of images I took on my A7RII - I messed up and had it set at 800ISO, so not the best examples, but I hope it give a sense of what this lens can do on the A7RII. I did use ACR with the Voigtlander 21/4M lens profile.
I had limited time to give it a quick test, so these are not the best you could do - so take it with these caveats.
As I previously stated, it's actually pretty good. Not 15/4.5-III good, but pretty good for such a small lens. Flare and ghosting is another story as you can see . . .

Beautiful image! I can imagine that mountain is much closer than it appears with such wide angle.

I know Sony cameras are renowned for sensor reflections shooting into a light source but is it lens specific as I noticed that the other image posted above (CV 15 III) into the sun is reflection free?

I just got the new CV15III and from my infinity tests, extreme edges are noticeably smeared. If I would crop the image to say 16-17mm, the lens performs very well at all apertures but corners are still only optimum at f/11.
LCA is high on this lens but gets somewhat cleaned up in LR but not completely.

Not sure if you have the 1635, Fred, but wonder how it compares.
Thanks for update, sound like the lens is good but still not optimal.

Fred, did you do that on the A7r or A7r II? Just curious. I did some tests of that lens owned by another FMer locally. The distance I had was about 20 feet or so, for sure not at infinity. I did it on my A7 II back then and it fared well, I would say. I didn't see much smearing at wide open. It got noticeably better at f/8. Another thing I noticed, it is quite a bit wider than my FE 16-35 at 16mm.
p.3 #18A7RII Voigtlander 15/4.5 and 21/4 wide angle lenses
I compared it to the 16-35/4 and TS-E 17L. The edges look great, even better than the 16-35/4 at 16mm. However, extreme edges look noticeably blurry. I will post some crops. Hang on...

Outside of the extreme edge (same images as above). This is the 'edge' at f/8 and the CV 15III looks actually sharper now.
That's why I wrote that the CV15III image cropped as a 17mm lens is excellent on the entire frame.
