With a D500 or D4 tacking is very good once you have locked on. If you lose your subject, it takes a bit to re-acqure the target, but once you've locked on, the lens tracks like a champ. I shoot this lens in parallel with a 300mm f/2.8... the 200-500VR does not track nearly as well as that lens, but it is almost as good as my former 200-400VR which is a very pricey alternative in Nikon's super-zoom line-up.

I doubt it. I did test it a bunch when I rented it for a month last summer.
But, I wish I had tested it more thoroughly for the very question you are asking. I do a lot of shooting of fast moving birds at a fishermen's co-op here. And I do remember feeling disappointed that the 200-500 had difficulty keeping up with the same pigeons here, that my 80-400 AFS has NO problem with. Both testings were done with the D500.
But....the Trenchmonkey may have a much clearer picture on all of this than I do; i.e. I am only going on my memory of a lens I rented.
