Bigger than their southwest cousin, these are the greater sandhill cranes.

More Greater Cranes from Crex Meadows, WI...
Shot with either D810 or D500 at the edge of light. The modern bodies really play nicely with the 200-500mm VR. I shot this lens and my 300mm f/2.8 on alternate days to compare. While the 300mm lens tracked better and was sharper, the 200-500mm lens was no slouch. Furthermore, the flexibility of the zoom range is perfect for my typical subjects.
cheers,
bruce

We (NM/CO) have the Greater Sandhills as well, Bruce...the Lesser Grus seem to more prevalent back East.

Used this lens extensively for the last year. I've browsed this thread quite a bit but never posted. Here's one of my recent favorites with a 1.4x TC

If there where any doubts in my mind about what this lens is capable of this page put them to rest.
Thanks to all of the excellent images, I purchased one a few weeks ago.
It's light enough to hand hold which is all I needed. Focus speed is alright and it's spot on.

These where taking today at Flamingo, FL.
Thanks for looking.
Rick

I searched the thread for discussion of lens creep but couldn't find any. Most things I've read say it's minimal but if I'm walking around, even slowly, with the lens attached to a peak design slide strap it will always extend all the way out to 500mm. Does anyone else notice this

Thanks trench...is it ok to walk with it extended like that? It doesn't put undo strain on the lens mount? I don't want to use the limiter because I often have to shoot quickly and don't want to fuss with unnecessary switches!

Sure, as long as you're carrying the lens (by the foot) and not just by the body.
(The limiter position won't matter, but it will "lock" at the 200mm position)
