Thanks, Birdie, and high praise coming from your direction! I do love the 200-500E in good light. I hope to also add the 300 PF to my kit again at some point, especially if I succomb to the D500.

Ariot - thank you for the offer, though I am not sure what I want to do yet. I will keep it in mind but feel free to get rid of it some other way if the opportunity presents itself.

Would my 600mm f/4 fit inside without a camera on it?

I don't think so, no. The bag is 14.5" and the 600/4 is ~17.5".

I'd probably want something a little more substantial for such a lens anyway

I was thinking strapped to my body. I'm struggling to find a pack to lug that beast a mile or two. I'm able to hand hold it no problem but it is very inconvenient to lug around. I'm fine with a 80-400 attached to camera while I'm in transit from point a to b.

The rings on that bag are just plastic, I wouldn't trust it anyway in that application.

KInesis make solid bags for long lenses. This one may work for you

They have many other sizes too.

From Brazilian Savannah last week; 2x cropping.

A female Red-crested Finch:

D7200 at 1.3x crop mode @ 500mm hand held, ISO 500, f/5.6 at 1/160s (VR on). 65% cropped (10/15.4Mp) - or in fact 10/24Mp = 42% cropped.

White-rumped Tanager and Pouteria torta flowers:

White-rumped Tanager and Pouteria torta flowers by Jose, on Flickr

D7200 at 1.3x crop mode @ 500mm hand held, ISO 100, f/6.3 at 1/160s (VR on). 49% cropped (7.5/15.4Mp) - or in fact 7.5/24Mp = 31% cropped.

The VR performance of this zoom is unbelievable: 1/160s hand held at an equivalent 500 x 1.5 x 1.3 ~ 1000mm tele!

I am also using this lens on the d7200 and find it to be much better than I expected, particularly in low light.
I was using my d7100 and the sigma C before upgrading to the nikon lens which made a decent difference to my results and then moving on to the d7200 which further improved things a little more.
Rather pleased with the fine feather detail and high ISO/low light performance with this combo.
Even large crops look great!

I was playing with the VR on this lens indoors yesterday, pressing the shutter half way reminds me of going into super slo-mo (assuming no moving subjects of course haha). My shaky hands can get sharp shots at 1/40-1/60 @ 500mm and from the looks of it here some members are able to go even slower with TC's to boot - that is definitely the best VR I've ever used.

Holy cow! That is an incredible image! From the many contributions being made on this thread... no one ever needs to make an excuse for owning this lens. It punches way above it's price point!

rented it last weekend for a test run. Like it a lot

Michimi in the pretty light

VR testing after dark

Late night at the Mazda shop

Backgrounds are too busy, but the zoom and fast AF made the shot possible in the first place. The 400 f/2.8 would have been too tight here, even on FX

Woah - that's cool

And it plays well with the TC-14e II - D500 AF grabs subjects even through heat flicker instantly like at this location below where the cars appear at high speed from below the hill crest - this is at near full zoom wide open with the TC

Angry eyes

Great pics everyone. I've been out of photography for about 5 years now and sold all my gear. I had twin boys, and figured my free and leisure time was up. Well they are 5 years old now and I have a bit more time so I'm getting back into it.

I used to shoot D3/D300s with a 400mm 2.8.

I just ordered the D500 yesterday and will be purchasing the 200-500mm soon. This seems like a nice and "somewhat" affordable way to get back into birding and wildlife. I can't wait

It's no 400 f2.8, but it's a heck of a lens for the price, and paired with your D500 I think you'll have a lot of fun. Enjoy, and be sure to post your shots!
