I think you'll love the sport mode. I keep the sport vr on even at high speeds as I love how stable it makes the viewfinder. I haven't seen any negative effects for bif with sport vr. That wasn't the case for the older vr versions and for me, one of the best reasons to upgrade to the e telephoto lenses is how good sport vr is.

Hey ya'll... so I am still getting used to shooting this lens - only a week old now. And finding that sometimes, I am getting a significant number of OOF images. But when the focus is spot on - its really good. I am generally shooting the lens at f/8 for more DOF. Any suggestions? I still have time to exchange for another copy.

If the lens is really good when the focus is spot on, then all you need is more practice.. It takes a while to get used to it especially if you never had such a long and heavy lens before. I shot with a 70-300 VR for a long time and it took some getting used to at first . Now I'm whipping that thing around like it was nothing.

Also, what are you trying to shoot? While the Df's AF capabilities are frequently and unfairly disparaged, it's not a first choice for a wild life camera. I get the sense most shooters here are using it with a D500 or D750 whose AF is superior.

I'd take a good look at your shutter speeds, been teaching BIF for years. #1 reason for OOF
images is inadequate SS. You can always "back off" when your long lens technique improves.
So many want to blame the glass (and tuning) If your camera AF settings are dialed in, and
you occasionally get a sharp capture...IT'S NOT THE LENS. I can nail 90% of my tries with a
D600's anemic AF. Technique and practice. Lots and lots of practice. Did I mention practice?!

Thanks for the feedback.... shooting wolves in captivity through one way glass - ya, I know - that alone makes the task difficult. Just for giggles, I swapped copies today with my dealer.... he is a really nice guy! we tested the new lens on a D810 - and its sharp... we looked at images on photoshop before leaving the store. And I agree - the Df is not exactly the camera I should be using. My intention is to get a D500 in the coming month... and fix my D800 - in for repair from a drop. I also still have a D7000 - so maybe I'll give that a shot! I know the Monkey would approve. I am also trying to keep my shutter speeds as high as I can.... shooting 1600 ISO at f/8 and trying to get speeds above 1/250 if I can - depends on the light. The wolf centre is typically dark, and difficult to get higher speeds - especially in overcast light.

I'm curious about when you say "the Df is not really the camera you should be using" with this lens? Do you feel that the auto focus system is not sufficient for this lens or that the sensor is not resolving enough, or the ergonomic's of the Df body is inhibiting satisfactory results?
I'm only asking because I own the Df and am seriously contemplating getting either the 200-500mm or the 200 f2 and would appreciate people's insight and experience.
