Agreed, it only tests the lens in one of many scenarios. Just trying to add information for those who are curious, since none of the reputable reviewing entities seem to have got a hold of one yet. Overall theme from the few who claim to have one is extremely positive, especially for the price.
Give it another week and we should have plenty of user reviews and comparisons on various forums.

Yeah, we really should be seeing how it handles a hand-held (and tripod) moon shot instead.
I'll be looking to see how it compares to the Canon 100-400 II. While I realize the FL is a bit off @ apricots to peaches, but if f/5.6 @ 400 for each is reasonably close, the extra to 500mm could be a bonus. Or conversely, see how they both perform at f/8 500 to see if the non-TC approach trumps the TC, even though it is likely a slightly lesser lens (given the price point differential).

How do you know that?
I had B&H check when they would be getting in their stock when I saw them change the expected date on their site. I ordered from them within a few hours of it becoming available for pre-order.

I just talked to a sales rep at B&H, and he said the 200-500 won't be in stock for another 8-12 weeks
It wasn't made clear whether this was after pre-orders are shipped, or if it's simply delayed.
B&H told someone else that they will have their shipment from Nikon by Sep 24 (currently in transit) and most of the pre-orders should be fulfilled in the first shipment. It's readily available in the UK as well according to some other reports. If there are delays, which is certainly possible, it is not universal and may be dealer or courier related.

Thanks for the encouraging news! I really want to test out the lens some with Fall sports and won't have too many opportunities with good light when October rolls around. I am a little discouraged by a recent review that says the AF is pretty slow.

Hopefully it's true.
At $1,396, and given how good it appears to be optically both from the MTF charts and initial impressions, something's got to give if they are to protect their more expensive lenses. I suspect the AF will be comparable to the 70-300VR, which is no speed demon but perfectly adequate for most normal situations. The lens also has some useful focus limiters which should help speed things up.

I believe you have gotten the delay of the 24-70 VR mixed up with the 200-500 or the delay issue in AU.
Not according to the B&H rep that I talked to this morning as he had my order number for the 200 - 500 in front of him and took quite a bit of time in researching their incoming stock. I guess we wont know anything until we start getting some US shipping confirmations and that can certainly vary from dealer to dealer as can the responses from those reps when we make inquiries.
