Regarding the Swedish photos, I'm looking at these Geese photos and not overly impressed unless the shooter is fairly far away. It just doesn't look that sharp when zoomed in

The geese look lite on detail. But, the static images of the church steeple and the boat look better than the geese ... wondering @ handheld / VR for the geese, but no VR for the static shots?

I think they are on version 3 now. the newer lenses list 4.5 stops for the VR. Version 2 was 4 stops and version 1 around 3 stops. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

So a lens only gets the I / II designation if it was upgraded from an earlier version then and "VR" is whatever the current version is at lens release?

After looking at the lens spec it looks like the newer lenses have the 4th version of VR.
The 70-200 f/2.8 had version 2 w/ 3.5 stops, 70-200 f/4 has version 3 w/ 4 stops and the newer lenses have version 4 w/ 4.5 stops and new sport mode

Good news is the VR will offer 5 stops, but only at one shutter speed to conserve battery life. Seriously hopefully it will work properly at all shutter speeds.

At this point, you may wish to take these very early reviews and pictures with a grain of salt. Many the images either appear to be over-sharpened or have increased edge contrast. As for hand-holdable and 1/25 sec... might be suitable for downsized D810 files to fit a 72ppi web image, but not acceptable in print.
The good news is that the lens is scheduled to ship tomorrow, which means some more solid and detailed reviews will finally begin to emerge.

Yes all true, but first we will have to wade through the "I bought a news lens and it is great, after all I bought it"... reviews.
Two or three weeks and some more reliable real world data will begin to appear.

I don't disagree but I didn't write the article. We'll see for ourselves soon enough.

Someone on DPR has this lens (maybe he's here too?) and he claims it's as sharp as a 300/4 but compared to the "pro" lenses the AF is slow. Given that other reviewers say the AF is fast, I'm going to bet it's somewhere in the middle:
I was out again - this time with much better light. This lens is probably as good as it gets optically. It has biting sharpness at f/5.6 and 500mm all across the frame - I've shot the same scenes with the 500 AF-S VR and AF-S II many times during the last few years and cannot believe what I see. But focusing is slow as a snail. It really takes technique for moving objects. For the money, this lens is a steal, a winner.

One more thing. I was out comparing the Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4 IF ED, the Nikon AF-S 500mm f/4 G VR and the 200-500mm f/5.6E VR this afternoon. I used a tripod, VR off and a cable release with M-Up and no vignetting correction and the same target (4 kilometers away). The findings are nothing short of spectacular.
The 200-500mm lens is as sharp at f/5.6 as the 500mm f/4G VR is at f/5.6, maybe even a tad sharper(!) I was using autofocus, not live-view, so maybe with live-view, the two lenses are closer together. This holds true for long distances. But the 200-500mm shows visibly more vignetting (quite a bit in fact, it can be removed of course) and as I mentioned it is a slow duck in focusing. And, of course, the 500mm f/4G VR offers f/4 as well
The 200mm-500mm lens at f/5.6 is on par with the Nikon AF-S 300mm f/4 IF ED lens at f/5.6, which is absolutely incredible. Vignetting is almost the same with the two lenses: a non-issue. Again, the 300mm AF-S is rather fast in focusing, the 200-500mm a slow duck. And the 300mm f/4 offers f/4.
I'm sorry for not putting up everything on a website. It would take me hours to put everything up with the file sizes and make a write-up. This is just for those interested in the lens.
