Much appreciated Don, thank you. Will try with out AF assist. Again, thank you.

My pleasure !

To be clear, what is happening is the AF lamp is setting off the flash Before you take the shot...

Cheers, Don

I have turned off the AF Assist on the camera. What about the AF assist in the flash ? Leave it on ? Sorry for the stupid questions, but flash is fairly new for me , so much to learn

There are no stupid questions

My experience is mainly with strobes but I would think you would leave the AF assist on in the flash.

The camera/lens could probably use the help with AF...

Do you have triggers or are you using the on board flash to trigger the remote flash ?

Hopefully, some one will jump in here with a definitive answer, I'm not sure how the flash is going to know to fire a AF assist ?

Cheers, Don

Just noticed you used the lens on the new D5. Do you notice of any af improvement compared to non-D5 bodies?

I've only used it on a D5 so I can't say.. they both arrived the same day..

nice shot! what are your thoughts on AF speed/acquisition of the lens when used with D5? Is it any faster than with non-D5 bodies?

Oh, believe me, I have some stupid questions . I am using SB910 on the hot shoe to trigger the remote flashes . Not sure about the Flash AF either, will need to do a bit of research .
Thanks again for your help.

Okay, just don't be shy about asking

I would think the SB910 AF assist on camera would also set off the remote flashes prematurely ?

When all else fails, read the manual, he, he...

I believe D1 is what you are looking for !

AF assist on the SB900 (and I believe the SB910 too) is a pattern of red lines projected from the light located on the bottom half of the flash unit. Front facing piece of opaque red plastic, between the hotshoe and the hinge/bend of the unit. It is unrelated to the pre-flashes used by the CLS system.

IIRC, it is a system with lots of "gotchas". It works, or not, depending on lens, aperture, focus point selected, focus mode and phase of the moon.

Also, on-camera AF assist may not work for the 200-500. The lens may block the AF assist light beam. The lens was not mentioned in any Nikon manuals because the lens came out after those camera. (The two cameras released after the 200-500, the D5 and D500, don't have on camera AF assist.) For other long lenses, Nikon has multiple categories of not-working. Some lenses are listed as "AF-assist illumination is not available" while others are listed as "may block the illuminator at ranges under X distance". (page 494 D810 manual.)

Thanks again Don . The manual and I are becoming well acquainted

Lara, thank you too. Guess I just need to experiment and see what happens.

its okay on the D5, better than on my D810, but of course not as snappy a prime (which I wouldn't expect).

Howard.
