Great shots Mark!

Looks like the VR handled the chopper vibrations just fine - did you feel that way?

Also what class are the foilers?

Thanks

Patrick

Some really great shots from everyone !

I tried the lens very late in the evening with some off camera flash hidden the bushes to try and capture my late evening visiting Ruby Throat males. I was quite surprised that the lens could even grab focus on some as I could not even see through the view finder.

I left Auto ISO on , but probably should have set it manually a bit higher. Not sure why it did not go higher other than the pre flash might have done something. If anyone can help explain, would greatly appreciate it.

The VR helped with the hand unsteadiness and the AF to lock but didn't really do anything for the chopper vibration. It was a real struggle with a lens that long and even at 1/4000 some shots were writeoffs and most at 500mm are not totally pixel sharp at 100% (D800E and I am picky though). I just had to just shoot a lot of frames. If I did this again I definitely rent a gyro stabiliser. I really wish the heli pilot could have got closer but he had to be safe and stay within his limits.

The foiling boats are International Moths. Amazing machines!

Turn off the AF assist lamp/light and shoot in manual mode. Leave the iso at 100, f8ish and speed at 1/250" to start.

A test shot should give you an idea of which way to adjust flash power, etc.

Now this will give you a "flash" shot with no ambient light.

If you just want to use the flash as fill, still turn off the AF assist light and shoot in aperture mode. Again, test shot first !

Cheers, Don

I thought they might be Moths - there are a number round here (Annapolis, Maryland) but that is a unique perspective. Very cool to see the foil trails in the water with those overhead shots.

Interesting to learn that as good as the VR is in general on the 200-500 that the lack of the active setting maybe one place Nikon made some significant cost savings.

Just noticed you used the lens on the new D5. Do you notice of any af improvement compared to non-D5 bodies?
