Here's a quick and dirty test shot using the Nikon 200-500. I was very impressed with the lens...sharper than it should be for the price -- without pixel peeping I would have a hard time telling whether it was shot with my 600E or 200-500, no kidding! VR is fantastic, seems better than my 600E. Light weight...easy to handle with my gripped D810...no special harness/strap required. Only downfall is the glacially slow AF @500mm moving from MFD to 30 feet, which is why I had to (unfortunately) return it.

AF speed is a little bit of a downer but hardly a deal breaker unless you're a complete novice. I'll hold on to mine to see how it does on a D500. Will be a tad faster, I imagine. But it works well enough now, even in poor light.

Okay, my new lens will be delivered tomorrow! I can't wait! It may take me a few days before I can start using it though. Hopefully I will have some images to show that are as good as what everyone here seems to be getting....

Granted, most of my sales come from larger boids (Sandhills & Eagles)
I find nothing wrong with the AF on this zoom. Really quick lock on with
the D7200 in crop mode (FOV 1000mm)

I also really really like that it does color and bokeh like any other Nikon tele!

I haven't posted on this site for some time I have just sold my 150-600 Tamron and have just placed my order for the Nikon 200-500 and I don't appreciate being called a noob. Too many people are tied up with facts and figures just get out there and take photographs.

Charles.

Wow, that is incredible! What is there not to like with this image! Love the color, the sharpness, everything. Very well done and a testament to how good this zoom really is.

Thank you for sharing this with us

Excellent capture of the Woodie, Christian. As you noted, the color and bokeh are superb.

Blue Titmice are very fast, unpredictable, and small. Hence represent a real challenge.
D3s with the 200-500mm.

Very impressive, beautiful shot. I have to guess you were in a good blind of some sort. Woodies are very skittish and will not tolerate humans too close in any setting!

Thanks. But I hate blinds! I would never attempt to conceal myself from the animals I photograph. At any rate the wood ducks at Valley Green on the Wissahickon are nearly as tame as mallards and tolerate hundreds of visitors, walkers, joggers, screaming kids and their dogs every day. Gotta love city parks!

I have family there and know that river at bit. I'll bring my gear next time I go to Philadelphia!

This works out only in March, before leaf-out and before the stocked trout fishing season! There are woodies around throughout the year, but they disperse up and down the creek for nesting and mostly revert to acting like wild ducks away from the Valley Green Inn.

An up-sampled 8 MP center crop of the next frame in the series. Still looks okay for web display or maybe an 8x10 or even 11x14 print. In good light and for my typical bird/wildlife subject distances of 10-100 ft the lens does good job.
