...nice shots. BTW which TC..?? 1.4X TC-II or TC-III..??
My experience with both...no difference in IQ. Only lens I saw a "perk"
to the III was with the Chubster...and that was slightly more contrast.
One's TC choice may be defined by compatibility with glass on hand or
future considerations.

We traded in an f/5.6 MF 600 for the convenience of the 200-500.

In poor conditions (flat light in a snow squall at sunrise) it's quickly apparent the lens is no 200-400. That it works at all is remarkable, though.

These guys were soaking wet after a heavy, monsoon-type rainfall here in Darwin. Both birds were 30-40 meters high in the trees... pretty tight crops, hand held with the D750.

Cheers and good light,
David

p.56 #7 · Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR

Have been following this thread from inception and with much interest. Have read some excellent discussions and seen some fantastic shots with the Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 lens.Only recently one of my friends have bought this lens, mainly for birding, using with D7000.I have borrowed the lens from him and D7100 + 1.4 X Tc from another friend for testing them out this weekend.I tried them out ( not the TC though as the light was awefull) and must admit I am really impressed. My present set-up is Canon 70D + Tamron 150-600mm Sp Di VC.I like my equipment very much, but at the same time always like to be on look out for possible upgradation. As I shoot birds primarily,I have concentrated on my subjects.
Now first coming to what I did not liked....1. The hood, which could have been a bit better. 2. The AF speed although not slow, somewhat kept me wanting for a bit more. (both have been pointed out by many in this forum and others as well).
What I liked....1.The outstanding sharpness...even at wide-open-f5.6. 2.The fantastic 'bokeh' and the OOF rendering,it is superb. 3.The AF Speed ( yes you heard me right...I liked it as-well) 4. The overall balance and the portability/hand-holdability. 5. Although I didn't use much with the 1.4X TC, but I liked the combo. In good light,I think I can generate some good results from them. So I liked the fact that there was this lens and 1.4X TC compatibility. 6. The VR,which is really great. 7.The Tripod foot, solid and comfortable.

All the above images are processed in the same line as I process my 70D RAW files, but only this time I used Nikon's NX2 software instead of Canon's DPP.

Thanks

A couple of shots from yesterday. Both are with the D7200, one with the 200-500 f5.6 and the other with the Sigma 150-600 C. My wife took the one with the 200-500 and I was using the Sigma, both were taken at the same instance with only a slight difference in perspective. This is just for comparison sake as this was not a scientific effort but does represent real world results.

Two frame-filling shots of the formel and the tiercel under thick cloud cover. Basically I was out shooting only because the nest is right down the street and I'm documenting the goings-on. The results aren't quite what you'd get from a 400 or 500 mm prime, but I don't think many clients would notice the difference.

File this one under doing silly things with new lenses. How good is that new VR system? Bye-bye camera shake as a relevant factor in shooting with a telephoto good!

Although I have a strong preference for my 300/4 PF (and, of course, my 500/4) the 200-500 more than does the job. The capture below (with the D810) was heavily cropped.

I can't get over the new VR system. ~1/100 handheld shooting and no camera shake whatever. I so want a 500E or 600E now!
