It is really no hardship to turn the barrel that much. A shorter turn would have meant a higher cost.

For shooting sports it can be for sure. I know the costs would rise, like I said it's just something I am not excited about from the lens. Overall, worth every single penny, no doubt.

Purchased this lens because of this thread. I think the overall weight is nice, not too heavy at all. Only thing I don't like is how much you have to turn the barrel to get from 200 to 500mm. Its longer than it should be IMHO.

Image is solid from the lens. Really shocked to be honest. I paired it with a D750.

Perfect illustration of what I mean when I say that rendering of OOF areas is consistent with other Nikon telephoto lenses. I'm not sure what additional information anyone who prioritizes image quality - as presumably all photographers do - would need.

I bought a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary for my wife from a fellow FMer this week so I'll be comparing it with the 200-500 this weekend.

Here are a few from this afternoon with the D7200 and 200-500 f5.6

I am amazed by the amount of details the lens/camera (of course the photographer too) can capture. Thanks for sharing.

It's a tough call to make when I upload them on my photo hosting site for my own viewing. I have a Ultra HD screen, 3840 x 2160 pixels and anything smaller than 1200 pixels high is like looking at a postage stamp and you lose impact due to their tiny size - it is difficult to make out their sharpness as they are so small. Not only that, but a 2,000 pixels high image on an Ulta HD screen looks stunning!!

Many people now have HD - 2560 x 1440 pixels - or Ulta HD screens these days and thus why I now post larger images as small images lose any impact. However, you can make them smaller by pressing "ctrl" and use the scroll wheel on your mouse to make them smaller. This is better than people with larger screens using "ctrl" and scroll and making them larger as sharpness is lost when making them larger, not when making them smaller. So, my thinking is it is better to reduce than to enlarge.

Thx for the "ctrl" trick, Lance. I'm 1/2 embarrassed to admit I didn't know that.
Usually on my Chromebook (since I'm never at home or sitting still) this is so cool,
and ya won't hear me complain about file sizes anytime soon.

Thanks, Will. To be quite honest with you, it is a recently learned trick for me as well.
It had to do with the same complaint on another forum whereby a member advised of this little trick .

It's amazing what a difference good lighting makes! Good light bathing this guy, after three basically crappy weekends of overcast.

Hand held, out on a ranch. I'm totally pleased with the sharpness of this lens. I wasn't keen on the power pole, but what can you do, it's what they like. He was too pretty not to show. Unfortunately, I then switched to the Sigma 150-600mm Sport and never saw another thing.

Craig's hawk shot above demonstrates beautifully what this lens does when given the light! This hen cardinal isn't nearly as stunning but I was happy to have some sun to shoot with today (despite -9 temps this ayem in Minneapolis.)
