Great shots as usual Lance. Did you stop down to f8 for additional sharpness? Do you have any wide open shots of these birds for comparison?
I shot at f8 because I was rather close to the bird and would therefore have reduced the DOF. Unfortunately, I didn't open it wide open and try that, but I hope to get another go today with the lens.

This lens doesn't have a coating that the "pro" lenses have. that coating is supposed to reduce the reflections. That is one of the reasons for the low price. Have any one notice this defect?
The lens does have Super Integrated Coating, just not the fancy Nano ones.
Not sure I understand your "Defect" question The lens is not defective if it doesn't have Nano. Tons of Nikon lenses don't have the Nano and they work fine.

I read his post as defect=reflections, not the lens itself

Just playing with the lens on some pigeons hiding from the rain on my balcony. iso 64, @500, 1/30 f5.6handheld. With all these rains the last few days, I haven't had much chance to try this lens yet

This looks like a strong This lens looks like it's a very good alternative to Sigma's 150-600 S. I think I'll be staying away from it due to its lack of weather sealing though.

Haha, Kirk used to build the lens support right into the collar like on the NC-300. Looks like they have found a way to get another $90. The RRS one will probably be strong enough and one-piece, might be worth waiting for.

Dpreview doesn't review the Sigma, but did review the new Tamron 150-600. It looks impressive. I would like to try this Tamron and compare it with the Nikon at its range:200-500

@370mm f5.6, sorry the picture is heaviy process as I was using hilight weighed metering as the background was quite bright so the unprocessed raw is rather dark.
Never thought I would try a flower shot with 500mm but still stuck on my balcony. [email protected], 1/160 s iso64 on d810. Next week I have a quick trip for hopefully whale watching but the sea is rather rough lately with all the monsoon that we have. Keep my fingers crossed!

Hope you make it out on the water and find some whales under nice skies! I'll be very interested to hear how the lens works for whales, especially if the AF speed is up to the task for breaching whales and how it handles specular highlights and challenging lighting out on the water. I currently use a D810 + 80-400 but would consider the 200-500 if it looks like it's a keeper.
