Second time out in the field with the D500 + 200-500. Better results but still deciding whether to use group or D25 as the go to AF, also lens is back focusing a little, which I'll adjust shortly

I know how you feel. I have been barely making it out since April. Lately I have not been out at all....only shooting through the window. Hopefully that will improve shortly. It has to !

My first ever siting of a wild owl today, and a beautiful great horned owl at that. All shots with D610, 500mm, f5.6, ISO 800, 1/500 (should have used faster but didn't anticipate catching him in flight)

Don't regret the shutter speed. You were really lucky to get this. It is beautiful! Looks like an old Red Maple in a hardwood stand on an overcast day. I can feel it. I too have never seen a wild GHO in daylight in the northeast woods ... in Everglades yes.... several.
You did well just to spot this bird. I think capturing one inside the north woods is unusual. Don't you?

Cheers mate - probably wouldn't have noticed him if it wasn't for a few crows that were squawking at him, bad news for the owl but lucky for me. The Everglades sound like an amazing place for photography, I'll have to go down there someday.
