A little disappointed that it is so windy here. Not really kayak weather. Instead, I gathered up the dogs and a couple balls and headed down to the lake. Nikon pulled a rabbit out of their hat with this lens!

Got mine last Friday. Really looking forward to giving it a workout on the kayak in Maine.
This lens is so exciting!
Ok.....so you probably already know all the following. Just trying to help out without sounding like a know it all.
I keep a strap around my neck and the other end screwed into the lens foot. I happen to have the Black Rapid but of course it does not matter. A few weeks ago I hit the hood on the gunwale and it instantly popped off overboard. Grabbed it before it sank.
My loons' nesting failed this year and the two of them are not nailed down to one spot as they would if they were feeding a youngster. So rather than chase them around......I started shooting the abundance of aquatic insects along the edges today. It is fun! The edges are loaded with these insects and the birds are there to gobble them up. It's all about the huge flow of energy right now.
LOVE the right angle finder over the live view. Wish Nikon would put more work into making this right angle finder better. But I know I am a minority on this one.
I have a canoe but still had to be careful not to lean too far. Got so low this morning (over the edge of the gunwale) that the water came into the hood for an instant.
Have fun!
Next week.......Am very interested in hearing about your photo adventure up here. Wish you the best of luck

This is my 2nd 200-500.
the first one was left on the roof of my van after changing to a 55mm micro nikkor.
After leaving the park and back in homestead, a car pulls out in front of me and I hit the breaks hard. Hear a thump thump on the roof and see my 200-500 come flying off in front of me. Totally trashed. I didn't even stop, just looked at the pieces through my side mirror.
The new lens seems a little more responsive, but there's no way to compare now.
Lots of water in the glades and the owls and hawks are hanging around the tree line looking for crayfish.
Thanks for looking.

If anyone with the Nikon 200-500 f/5.6 can confirm their experience:
My newly acquired (used, bought here) when using on a tripod with long exposure, if VR is on the lens makes a continuous whine. Never experienced that with any other lens. Has anyone else had this? If so, perhaps it's normal (the lens has a "voice coil VR motor). If not, it's off to Nikon we go.
It's really a cool lens especially for the $$. FYI, I also own the Tammy 150-600 G2 and same IQ just f/6.3. But handles as well. Just if you need the xtra 100mm.
