I am currently living in Italy with my family and my son is trying out for a competition soccer league that is a mixture of American, British and Italian teams. He may be playing on one of the other nations teams or facing against them in games.
This has led me to looking for a longer lens to shoot him playing and the 200-500mm seems like a steal. Does any one have any experience shooting sports with the lens and its performance. 90% of what I see on the thread is birds and just wondering how it does with sports and occasional portraits.
Thank you in advance.

Been shootin' rodeo (as well as BIF) goin' on 2 yrs now. It's been great, the range
(especially on FX) really allows for one stop shopping IMO. Have some candid portraits
that I'm happy with but the 200/300 primes usually get the call there for the isolation vs f5.6

Thanks Will. Great set of images. That is what I was hoping to hear. Being active duty right now, I am not wanting to invest too heavily in glass until I retire in 4 years. I feel the 200-500 will serve my needs and allow me to capture moments of my son that the family can enjoy.

You bet, Greg. You will not be disappointed with one. I've even used it for some landscape ops.
Having a constant f5.6 with a 300mm-750mm FOV on a cropper is remarkable as well. Appreciate it.

Another from the kayak with the D5. Blue skies opened up about an hour after I returned home. Hoping for better skies in the next outing.
